93% The Sessions

All Critics (86) | Top Critics (32) | Fresh (80) | Rotten (6)

Most often with The Sessions the blunt comedy outweighs the drift toward sanctimony.

It sends viewers out of the theater with a heightened sense of the physical and a real feeling for all the things that sex means in human life.

The achievement of this simply told, exceptionally fine film is the clarity with which it portrays the drama of a good soul in an inert body.

Hawkes' performance is the must-see hook of The Sessions, but Hunt gives this funny, touching movie its soul.

Character actor John Hawkes is often cast as a frightening rustic (Winter's Bone, Martha Marcy May Marlene), but he gives a tender and witty performance here as Mark O'Brien.

The joy of The Sessions goes beyond sexual healing. It makes physical intimacy far more a matter of the heart, and you won't be alone wiping an occasional tear.

... a story of triumph over disability that takes the form of an uplifting sex comedy rather than a depressing saga of a dying man.

That exceedingly rare combination of sexy, clever and sweet, a winning tale of one charming disabled man's quest to get some stank on his hangdown.

The film greatly benefits from Hawkes' tremendous performance. (Full Content Review for Parents also available)

For the entire endeavor to emotionally register, you must buy into the romance that purportedly blossoms between Hawkes and Hunt. I didn't, not for a second.

Hawkes' work here is that good that it carries one away on a wave of emotion that dismisses critical thought. The film around him could have been better but you're unlikely to realize that while you're watching it.

...a perfectly watchable showcase for two undeniably above-average performances.

Uneven and perhaps a little too tidy as it aims to promote one man's extraordinary spirit. It is John Hawkes and Helen Hunt, however, who are most worth seeing.

Practically ignores everything about O'Brien's life except as it relates to his sexual odyssey, turning the life of the man into little more than a curio.

A powerful expression of our common needs, fears, and consolations.

For better and for worse, The Sessions has 'crowd-pleaser' written all over it.

Neither an issue-pushing disability drama or a crude, American Polio-style sex comedy, The Sessions is sweet and winning - 'feel good' minus the fingers down the throat.

Hubble sees violent star formation episodes in dwarf galaxies

ScienceDaily (Oct. 27, 2012) ? The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has imaged the faint irregular galaxy NGC 3738, a starburst galaxy. The galaxy is in the midst of a violent episode of star formation, during which it is converting reservoirs of hydrogen gas located in the galaxy's center into stars. Hubble spots this gas glowing red around NGC 3738, one of the most distinctive signs of ongoing star formation.

Lying in the constellation of Ursa Major (The Great Bear), NGC 3738 is located about 12 million light-years from the sun, and belongs to the Messier 81 group of galaxies. This galaxy -- first observed by astronomer William Herschel back in 1789 -- is a nearby example of a blue compact dwarf, the faintest type of starburst galaxy. Blue compact dwarfs are small compared to large spiral galaxies -- NGC 3738 is around 10,000 light-years across, just one tenth of the size of the Milky Way.

This type of galaxy is blue in appearance by virtue of containing large clusters of hot, massive stars, which ionize the surrounding interstellar gas with their intense ultraviolet radiation. They are relatively faint and appear to be irregular in shape. Unlike spirals or elliptical galaxies, irregular galaxies do not have any distinctive features, such as a nuclear bulge or spiral arms. Rather, they are extremely chaotic in appearance. These galaxies are thought to resemble some of the earliest that formed in the Universe and may provide clues as to how stars appeared shortly after the Big Bang.

This image was created by combining visual and infrared images taken with the Wide Field Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The field of view of the Wide Field Channel is approximately 3.4 by 3.4 arcminutes wide.

Fungal meningitis outbreak isn't the first

The growing illnesses and deaths blamed on tainted pain shots from a Massachusetts compounding pharmacy may be the worst such outbreak of fungal meningitis in U.S. history -- but it?s not the first. Five people were sickened and one died in a similar outbreak in 2002.

Maine innovation on display at Colisee in Lewiston ? Business ...

LEWISTON, Maine ? It was like the brainiest party you?d ever seen: Roughly 400 people crowded into the Androscoggin Bank Colisee to sip wine, eat cheese and exchange ideas.

Really big ideas.

For the first time, The Maine Technology Institute held its Innovation Economy showcase in Lewiston and the turnout was huge. Hundreds came to see and hear the latest in matters such as renewable energy, communications, biotechnology and manufacturing.

?It?s just amazing,? said MTI President Robert Martin, ?the reach and breadth of what Maine companies can do.?

There was a lot of life-changing technology on display, but one of the busiest booths around was more in the realm of leisure. This belonged to Pantheon Guitars, a Lewiston company that had segments of its high-end acoustic guitars on display.

The booth was busy almost at once. Even the nerdiest people admittedly don?t know how a guitar is made.

?That,? said Pantheon CEO John D. Karp, ?is part of the fun.?

Like all other businesses on display at the show, Pantheon has benefited from MTI, which since 2000 has awarded $142 million in grants and loans to Maine companies and research institutions.

?I?m a huge fan,? Karp said. ?They really helped us to make advances in our processes.?

A few booths down stood the people of Falcon Performance Footwear, an Auburn company. It also has received grants from MTI to help with development. In response to that, it put on display a boot, sliced down the middle to show its many parts.

The booth was manned by Carl Spang. As Falcon president, he doesn?t get out to mingle very often with other innovators.

?It?s great to be out at a local show and to see all these people,? Spang said.

Around the corner was Packgen, an Auburn company that manufactures containers made from composite materials. It, too, benefited from an MTI grant and as a result, it expects to create a dozen additional jobs in the coming year.

The show was about innovation, but it wasn?t as tech-heavy as it could have been. Men in coats and ties mingled with women in power suits. They drank beer and wine and gathered in small groups, talking shop or discussing the state of innovation in Maine.

Which was precisely the point.

?We have these great companies in the state, but you don?t see them; they?re tucked away here and there,? MTI spokeswoman Deborah Cook said. ?This is a chance for us to make all of this visible.?

Gov. Paul LePage, citing illness, failed to show to deliver a speech, but that didn?t quiet the enthusiasm of the gathering. Other speakers took his place, including David Kappos, undersecretary of commerce for intellectual property and director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and Desh Deshpande, a Boston venture capitalist and entrepreneur.

Pair of statues to honor David Dunbar Buick | Hemmings Blog ...

Even though his namesake car has one of the automobile industry?s deepest histories, David Dunbar Buick exists today as one of the early automotive world?s tragic tales. Buick came to Detroit at age two, persevered to create great cars with his sidekick, master machinist Walter Marr, and took on the young Billy Durant to help market his cars. History makes clear that Durant had other ideas. He turned Buick into the United States? top-selling car, but forced its creator from the firm just before he founded General Motors in 1910. Buick, the man, was nearly forgotten by the time he died in Detroit at age 74 in 1929. His fortune had been wiped out by bad investments in California oilfields and Florida real estate.

We recently heard from Lawrence R. Gustin, the longtime Buick PR chief turned automotive historian (and author of a definitive Durant biography), who described a unique unfolding effort to honor Buick appropriately. He is going to be memorialized with two life-size bronze statues: One in Flint, Michigan, the founding home of Buick cars, and the other in his seaside hometown of Arbroath, Scotland. The Flint statue is expected to be unveiled this December. Larry sent us the above photo of Joe Rundell working on his likeness of Buick. Joe is a retired machine repairman at the Chevrolet engine plant in Flint who made a reputation doing custom engraving work on firearms before turning his talents to sculpture. The Buick project is led by Al Hatch, who chairs the Back to the Bricks car show in downtown Flint since retiring from Rockwell Automation. The group he heads is considering locating a new statue of Durant near that of Buick and an existing one of Louis Chevrolet in Flint. That would be second statue of Durant in town; the first has stood for 24 years outside the onetime headquarters of the Durant-Dort Carriage Company. As Larry tells us, Al?s idea is to eventually turn Flint into something of a sculpture garden honoring locally prominent automotive pioneers such as Walter P. Chrysler, Charlie Nash, Albert Champion, Charles Kettering and the Reuther brothers, among others.

How To Get A Deal On A Commercial Property | Eric Chua : Life - First

Being a commercial property owner is exciting, however, it can also be quite an undertaking when trying to manage the property. All this can really make you confused about where exactly to get started so that you can make certain all your bases are covered. Trying to figure out everything you need to know about owning commercial property can be difficult, but this article can get you started into acquiring and owning a commercial property.

You can find different kinds of brokers. There are agents who only represent tenants and there are full-service brokers who work with both tenants and landlords. You may benefit significantly better from hiring the services of a broker working with tenants exclusively, as he has significantly more experience representing tenants successfully.

The key terms will include the pro forma and the rent roll. If you fail to check out the terms, you might find something that is at odds with the rent roll and make the pro forma unreliable.

TIP! Double-check that you are seeking a realistic amount of money for your property. Your property?s actual value is influenced by many factors.

Make sure the property you are interested in has access to utilities. Look for access to water, electricity, gas an a sewer or anything specific to what you intend to use this property for.

Always check the credentials of the inspectors you hire. Pay particular attention to the credentials of any pest-control experts because many of them are not licensed. Reviewing credentials will help you prevent major issues after you make the purchase.

You should acquire tour site checklists when you?re examining several properties. Make sure to advise the property owners when you want to take the next step past the first proposal responses. Don?t be shy about telling the owners that you are thinking about purchasing another property. This may ensure that you get a much more viable deal.

TIP! Before you begin seeking commercial real estate property, be sure to identify your requirements. Identify which features in a commercial property are high value to you, and make a list.

Don?t be led by hype and fads when searching for commercial real estate. Do not be hasty about making a investment decision. You will be full of regrets if you are stuck with a property that is not what you expected. Realize that it can sometimes take at least one year for the proper investment opportunity to present itself.

For those who have an interest in real estate, reference websites that offer information to a investors of all experience levels. No one can ever honestly claim that they know too much.

Have family, friends, and professional lenders partner with you to make sure you have enough cash to buy commercial real estate. Two repayment options for these loans are traditional repayments, in which you repay the loan at a certain interest rate, or a profit-based repayment, in which the lender receives some of the proceeds from the property?s income.

TIP! You need to be able to spot good deals to be able to make them advantageous to you. People who deal in real estate on a professional level can spot a great deal immediately.

When you are shopping around for commercial property, try to buy properties that are bigger on average. This lets you take advantage of economies of scale. There is a fixed cost associated with buying a building, plus a smaller marginal cost per unit, so the more units a building has, the lower the cost will be per unit.

You will be a successful investor if you spend enough time and work hard enough to find the best deal possible and get your property ready. You need to stay diligent at buying commercial real estate. If you remember the tips you have learned from this article, you will soon own the ideal commercial property for your

McDonald's Focuses Marketing On Healthy Messages - Len Saunders

From The Media Post?..

Some food and beverage marketers with perceived unhealthy products are asked why they advertise to kids, given the rise of childhood obesity. At McDonald?s, CMO Neil Golden suggests the question should be flipped to ask: Why not use advertising to improve kids? health?

Golden, who leads U.S. marketing, said McDonald?s is demonstrating ?marketing can be used for good? and is ?committed to being part of the dialogue? to advance that message.

?Doing what?s right not only means making kids happy, but healthy, too,? he said at the ANA?s Masters of Marketing event Thursday. McDonald?s has committed to offering a message in all national advertising about healthy lifestyles or nutrition benefits.

As for the role of Ronald McDonald as an icon in kids? marketing, Golden said: ?He is a force for good and just in case anyone was wondering, he?s not retiring.?

Golden, a father of four and former pro tennis player, said the issue of championing children?s health ?hits home for me.?

The Happy Meal is a core kids? product that he said offers a ?great combination of nutrition, value and fun,? while McDonald?s has taken steps to making it more nutritious, in part by adding apple slices to all servings and reducing sodium in McNuggets.

?That is McDonald?s making a difference and being a leader,? Golden adds.

More broadly, the city of New York has moved to limit the size of some soda servings, which other municipalities may follow. Golden said McDonald?s is in favor of self-regulation.

Earth sunblock only needed if planet warms easily

ScienceDaily (Oct. 11, 2012) ? An increasing number of scientists are studying ways to temporarily reduce the amount of sunlight reaching Earth to potentially stave off some of the worst effects of climate change. Because these sunlight reduction methods would only temporarily reduce temperatures, do nothing for the health of the oceans and affect different regions unevenly, researchers do not see it as a permanent fix. Most theoretical studies have examined this strategy by itself, in the absence of looking at simultaneous attempts to reduce emissions.

Now, a new computer analysis of future climate change that considers emissions reductions together with sunlight reduction shows that such drastic steps to cool Earth would only be necessary if the planet heats up easily with added greenhouse gases. The analysis, reported in the journal Climatic Change, might help future policymakers plan for a changing climate.

The study by researchers at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory explored sunlight reduction methods, or solar radiation management, in a computer model that followed emissions' effect on climate. The analysis shows there is a fundamental connection between the need for emissions reductions and the potential need for some sort of solar dimming.

"It's a what-if scenario analysis," said Steven Smith with the Joint Global Change Research Institute in College Park, Md,, a joint venture between PNNL and the University of Maryland. "The conditions under which policymakers might want to manage the amount of sun reaching earth depends on how sensitive the climate is to atmospheric greenhouse gases, and we just don't know that yet."

The analysis started with computer-based virtual worlds, or scenarios, that describe different potential pathways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which limits the amount of heat in Earth system due to greenhouse gas accumulation. The researchers combined these scenarios with solar radiation management, a type of geoengineering method that might include shading Earth from the sun's heat by either brightening clouds, mimicking the atmospheric cooling from volcanic eruptions or putting mirrors in space.

"Solar radiation management doesn't eliminate the need to reduce emissions. We do not want to dim sunlight over the long term -- that doesn't address the root cause of the problem and might also have negative regional effects. This study shows that the same conditions that would call for solar radiation management also require substantial emission reductions in order to meet the climate goals set by the world community," said Smith.

How much sun blocking might be needed depends on an uncertain factor called climate sensitivity. Much like beachgoers in the summer, Earth might be very sensitive to carbon dioxide, like someone who burns easily and constantly slathers on the sunscreen, or not, like someone who can get away with SPF 5 or 10.

Scientists measure climate sensitivity by how many degrees the atmosphere warms up if the concentration of carbon dioxide doubles. Smith said if the climate has a medium sensitivity of about 3 degrees Celsius (5.4 degrees Fahrenheit) per doubling of carbon dioxide, "it's less likely we'd need solar radiation management at all. We'd have time to stabilize the climate if we get going on reducing emissions. But if it's highly sensitive, say 4.5 degrees Celsius (8.1 degrees Fahrenheit) per doubling, we're going to need to use solar radiation management if we want to limit temperature changes."

According to NOAA's August report, Earth's temperature has already risen about 0.62 degrees Celsius (1.12 degrees Fahrenheit) since the beginning of the 20th century as the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has grown from 290 parts per million to 379 parts per million.

But the atmosphere hasn't reached equilibrium yet -- even if humans stopped putting more carbon dioxide into the air, the climate would still continue to change for a while longer. Scientists do not know what temperature Earth will reach at equilibrium, because they don't know how sensitive the planet is to greenhouse gases.

Further, the study showed that, when coupled with emission reductions, the amount of solar radiation management needed could be far less than the amount generally considered by researchers so far.

"Much of the current research has examined solar radiation management that is used as the sole means of offsetting a doubling of carbon dioxide concentrations. What we showed is that when coupled with emissions reductions, only a fraction of that amount of 'solar dimming' will be needed. This means that potential adverse impacts would be that much lower," said Smith. "This is all still in the research phase. We do not know enough about the impacts of potential solar radiation management technologies to use them at this time."

The study will also help decision-makers evaluate solar reduction technologies side-by-side, if it comes to that. Smith and his coauthor, PNNL atmospheric scientist and Laboratory Fellow Phil Rasch, devised a metric to quantify how much solar radiation management will be needed to keep warming under a particular temperature change threshold. Called degree-years, this metric can be used to evaluate the need for potential sunlight dimming technologies.

Whether such technologies will be needed at all, time will tell.

This work was supported by the non-profit Fund for Innovative Climate and Energy Research.

The first smartphone with a low-power IGZO display: the 4.9-inch Sharp Aquos Phone Zeta SH-02E

The first smartphone with an IGZO display the 49inch Sharp Aquos Phone Zeta SH02E

Japanese mega-operator NTT DoCoMo has just unveiled a interesting addition to its winter line-up: the Sharp Aquos Phone Zeta SH-02E, which is the first production smartphone we've seen with an IGZO display. If you hadn't heard, the indium gallium zinc oxide technology promises higher translucency compared to regular LCDs, which reduces the demand for backlighting and hence means less battery drain -- and you can learn more from our hands-on at IFA. Fortunately, in addition to its new-fangled 4.9-inch 1,280 x 720 panel, the SH-02E boasts a healthy spec sheet in other departments too, including a 16-megapixel camera, 1.5GHz S4 Pro quad-core engine with Adreno 320 graphics, NFC and compatibility with NTT's LTE network. The only slight downer is that it comes with Android 4.0 out of the box, but that's hardly going to be an issue by the time a model with this type of display lands stateside -- assuming it ever does.

Are You Self-Sabotaging Your Relationships? - The Daily Love

How your hidden beliefs may be getting in the way of you having all the love you deserve:

I was speaking with a client just the other day who wanted to refer a friend who had just gone through a very difficult breakup. While she was explaining the situation to me, my client brought up a story about some mistakes that she, herself, had made in her younger years.? I was really impressed by her candor when she confessed to how she used to try to rescue men who were troubled...even relating a story of how she ?stood by her man? to no avail when his double life landed him in jail.

However, I was even more impressed with her next revelation because her level of vulnerability and self-awareness were absolutely stunning. She confided that now, years later, she could look back and see that at the time, she was basically living out the ?world view? of a hurt little girl inside a grown woman?s body. That?s because her parents? divorce had affected her so much, she was committed to ?showing her mother? how to keep a relationship together no matter what...even if it was a fatally flawed relationship from the start. Can you see how that deep scripting kept her stuck in the wrong relationships for years until she learned some very hard lessons?

You can?t believe everything you think

It took my client years and many hard lessons to discover the wisdom she now possesses. Now in her mid-40?s, she?s single again...but she?s a much healthier woman who makes better decisions. That being said, through coaching, we have detected and worked through some other limiting beliefs that have done nothing but hold her back. The fact is that the very things which hold you back the most are the ones most hidden from view in your ?blind spots.? With coaching, you have an objective third party on your side who knows where to dig to find the gold. It?s not that we have all the answers...but we do have some really powerful questions that will reveal the answers within you.

Speaking of powerful questions...

I?ll give you another example. Just today I spoke with a brand new client who had been married twice before. When I asked her how she felt about being married, she put a smiley spin on it and said she didn?t have a great need to ever do it again because she had ?been there and done that.? She even made a joke about approaching ?Elizabeth Taylor-territory? - a reference to the famous movie star who was married seven times. While I can certainly appreciate that viewpoint, it was also clear with the smallest amount of further questioning that this lady had some deep, un-noticed and unspoken reservations about how her past choices reflected on her ability to make future choices. (By the way, for those reading along at home, the past definitely does not equal the future...if you are smart enough to learn from it.)

In other words, that single, invisible and un-noticed belief...which is protected by her good sense of humor...was more than enough to cause her to self-sabotage herself again and again whenever someone seemed to have any amount of ?potential.? Can you see it? Plus when you add that to her underlying self-esteem issues that pulled her dating standards far too low, it was clear that this very attractive and good-hearted woman was in for a world of pain when it came to relationships. In essence, her blind spots were making her ?jerk bait? and every single failure only brought her standards and expectations ever lower. I wonder how many of you may be able to relate?

How much time can you afford to waste?

As I?ve demonstrated, you are doomed to repeat the same painful lessons of your past over and over again ? until you learn from them. If you or someone you know has been struggling for some time in the area of relationships, the chances are very good that they haven?t yet identified the root of their issues and without some sort of intervention, that pattern is not likely to just spontaneously change. The beauty of coaching is that you will get a new perspective on old issues from someone who?s trained to zero in on the problems and help clients to ?correct and continue? ? always moving forward.

Why wait when you can enjoy rapid transformation?

If these examples I?ve just given make sense to you, that should give you a good idea of just how fast change can actually happen. In the time it took to read this short blog, two beautiful and really wonderful women had breakthroughs that were absolutely life-changing to say the least. In just moments, we literally saved them what could have been years of struggle with the wrong partners had they not done the work. The good news is that our work together created all new possibilities for them that did not exist previously.

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleMartin Hutchinson writes: With Mitt Romney's debate performance last week, Election 2012 has begun to swing Republican on the presidential side.

According to a recent poll by Rasmussen, in the 11 swing states Romney now leads President Obama by a slim 49% to 47% margin. Collectively, these states hold 146 Electoral College votes, or enough to determine the outcome.

Yet with two more debates still left on the slate, the truth is the fortunes of both candidates will likely swing back and forth right up to the wire.

With 27 days until voters head to the polls it's shaping up to be a photo finish.

For investors, that means next month should be volatile as traders attempt to guess the outcome.

However, the long-term results are what's really important, not only for the "big picture" economy, but for particular companies and sectors that can be expected to benefit from either an Obama win or a Romney win.

After all, there are considerable differences between the two candidates' policy prescriptions.

And as long-term dividend stock investors it is going to be crucial that we take advantage of these differences, repositioning our portfolio when we know the election result so we can optimize its performance through the new administration.

With the race still in doubt, here are 10 dividend stock suggestions from the Standard and Poor's 500 Index -- five for each candidate. The selections for each candidate can be expected to do better if he wins, and should therefore be bought when the election result is known --or perhaps before the election as a hedge against your least favorite candidate winning!

If Obama Wins Election 2012, Buy These Dividend Stocks

The following stocks should benefit should President Obama win re-election:

?H&R Block (NYSE: HRB). If President Obama wins election 2012, it seems almost certain that taxes will rise, at least for those with incomes above $250,000 and probably for many people poorer than that. In addition, there's likely to be a mass reshuffling of allowances and tax rates, changing the best tax strategies for everyone with any complexity at all in their tax returns.

This has to be good news for tax preparers, the largest of which is HRB, both directly through their network of offices and indirectly through their TaxCut tax software. HRB has a dividend yield of 4.5%, and a historic dividend payout ratio of 60%.

?Cliffs Natural Resources (NYSE: CLF). If Obama wins, Ben Bernanke is likely to stay in office as Fed chairman, and be replaced by a like-minded successor when his term of office ends in January 2014. That means interest rates should stay low -- good news for commodity stocks like CLF, an iron ore and coal producer. CLF has been generous on the dividend front, and now pays $2.50 per share, giving it a yield of 6.3%. Its historic payout ratio is about 25%, but that will increase as 2012 has been a tough year.

?People's United Financial Corp (Nasdaq: PBCT). Banks make money on the differential between short-term and long-term rates. With Bernanke at the Fed helm, this differential has been high, swelling profits for the likes of PBCT, a retail-oriented bank in New England - good Obama country.

Unlike most banks, PBCT is still paying decent dividends, and yields 5.1%. Its earnings payout ratio is high, but expected to drop going forward as the losses from 2008 recede.

?Health Care REIT Inc. (NYSE: HCN). The president's Obamacare healthcare plan will greatly increase the healthcare provision to a large percentage of the currently uninsured, which will in turn increase the demand for healthcare services.

That will benefit healthcare REITs such as HCN, which specializes in senior living and healthcare properties. HCN yields 5.0% and pays out more than 100% of its earnings, which are artificially depressed by real estate depreciation charges. ?Exelon Corporation (NYSE: EXC) This Chicago-based utility has excellent connections with the Obama administration and a large business in renewable energy. As a result, it can expect to do well from both policy and connections if the president is re-elected. EXC pays dividends of $2.10 per year, yields 5.8% and its dividends are about 88% of historic earnings.

If Romney Wins Election 2012, Buy These Dividend Stocks

On the other side of the coin, the following stocks should benefit if Mitt Romney wins:

?Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) Candidate Romney has indicated that he wants to rebuild the U.S. defense capability and has outlined a fairly aggressive foreign policy. LMT is a major military aircraft and defense systems manufacturer well placed to take advantage of this. It pays $4.60 per annum in dividends, yields 4.9% and its dividend payout ratio is about 45% of earnings.

?Federated Investors Inc. (NYSE: FII) Romney has indicated that he will not reappoint Ben Bernanke, which presumably means interest rates will generally rise. That's good news for the mutual fund business, whose money market funds will once again become viable, attractive investments and whose stock funds will once again attract long-term holders seeking to fund their retirement. Federated is a major mutual fund provider that should benefit from this, and with a dividend of 96 cents/share annually yields 4.6%. Its payout ratio is about 63% of historic earnings.

?Conoco Philips (NYSE: COP) Romney has indicated that U.S. energy independence is a major goal, and COP has a large shale and tar sands business, which should benefit substantially. With a dividend of $2.64 per share it yields 4.6%. However, it pays out only about a third of historic earnings, so there's room for major dividend growth as earnings rise.

?Baxter International Inc. (NYSE: BAX). President Obama's healthcare legislation includes a substantial tax on medical devices, which Romney has promised to repeal. BAX is the highest yielding among the major medical device manufacturers, although its $1.80 annual dividend still gives it a yield of only 2.9%. However with a payout ratio of only 45% that dividend has lots of room to grow.

?Staples Inc. (Nasdaq: SPLS) Mitt Romney helped to found this office supplies chain when he was at Bain Capital; it was his first big deal. You'd better believe it would find ways to do well from a Romney presidency. With a $.044 annual dividend it yields 3.8%, but pays out only a third of earnings.

So you see, whether Romney or President Obama wins election 2012, there is always an upside to be found in the markets-especially if you know this double your money strategy.

IMF forecasts slowing world economic growth

TOKYO (AP) ? Plagued by uncertainty and fresh setbacks, the world economy has weakened further and will grow more slowly over the next year, the International Monetary Fund says in its latest forecast.

Advanced economies are risking recession, the international lending organization said in a quarterly update of its World Economic Outlook, and the malaise is spreading to more dynamic emerging economies such as China.

The IMF forecasts that the world economy will expand 3.3 percent this year, down from the estimate of 3.5 percent growth it issued in July. Its forecast for growth in 2013 is 3.6 percent, down from 3.9 percent three months ago and 4.1 percent in April.

Underpinning that bleaker scenario are the assumptions that Europe will continue to ease monetary policy and that the U.S. will avert a crushing blow to growth by fending off a so-called "fiscal cliff" that could result from a failure to reach a compromise on its budget law and tax cuts.

Conditions could worsen if the United States doesn't deal with its budget crisis soon, the IMF said.

"Downside risks have increased and are considerable," the fund said. It said its forecasts are based "on critical policy action in the euro area and the United States, and it is very difficult to estimate the probability that this action will materialize."

The IMF has urged the U.S. to raise the ceiling on the level of debt the government can issue, which is capped by law. In August 2011, a battle between the Obama administration and Congress over raising the limit wasn't resolved until the U.S. almost defaulted on its debt.

Global efforts to ease credit and increase the amount of money available for lending are helping, but appear to be yielding diminishing returns, as are fiscal stimulus policies, the IMF warned.

"Because uncertainty is high, confidence is low, and financial sectors are weak, the significant fiscal achievements have been accompanied by disappointing growth or recessions," it said.

Among other things, it says governments need to do more to relieve the burden of household debt that is constraining spending power and thus crippling demand.

While large corporations pay record low rates for credit, households and small companies struggle to obtain bank loans, it said.

Fortifying domestic demand is all the more crucial given weakening trade trends. The IMF forecasts that growth in world trade volume will slump to 3.2 percent this year from 5.8 percent last year and 12.6 percent in 2010.

"Low growth and uncertainty in advanced economies are affecting emerging market and developing economies through both trade and financial channels, adding to homegrown weaknesses," the IMF's chief economist, Olivier Blanchard, said in a statement.

But he told reporters Tuesday a more optimistic scenario was possible if the right measures are taken, such as fixing banks in European countries and reducing the uncertainty about U.S. policies.

"The case for an upside scenario is stronger than it has been," he said at the opening of the IMF meeting in Tokyo.

He noted some positive signs in the U.S. economy such as a turnaround in the housing market. The IMF also sees the slowdown in China as part of a shift from the past double-digit growth to a rate that is "sustainable," a process he described as "a soft landing." And the slowdown in developed nations had pushed down exports, the key factor behind the slowdown in China, Blanchard and other IMF officials said.

The IMF raised the U.S. growth forecast slightly, to 2.2 percent this year from 2 percent in July. For 2013, though, it expects U.S. growth of 2.1 percent, down from 2.3 percent.

Among the 17 nations that use the euro, low growth in the major "core economies," such as Germany and France, will be offset by outright contractions in the smaller economies, leading real gross domestic product to fall by about 0.4 percent in 2012, the IMF said.

It forecasts growth in the euro area will stay flat in the first half of 2013 and tick up to about 1 percent in the second half of the year, the IMF said.

The report was released just ahead of the World Bank-IMF annual meeting, which is being held in Tokyo this week. The gathering of some 10,000 bankers, executives and officials will likely refocus attention on Japan's failure to escape its own economic slump two decades after its own financial implosion in the early 1990s.

The IMF said it expects growth in Japan to hit 2.2 percent this year but to slacken further as reconstruction from the March 2011 disasters winds down, falling to 1.2 percent in 2013.

Japan, whose population is both shrinking and aging faster than elsewhere, is confronting problems of high debt and stagnation, it said.

As usual, the bright spots are developing economies that were less affected by the global financial crisis, where rising employment and strong demand will help support growth, the IMF said.

China's economy will likely expand 7.8 percent this year, down from July's 8 percent forecast, though a pickup in construction projects is expected to spur growth late in the year. India's economy will grow 4.9 percent, down from 6.1 percent. And Brazil's growth will be only 1.5 percent, compared to 2.5 percent.

The IMF advised policymakers to devise stronger medium-term fiscal and structural reforms to shore up confidence in the growth potential of the advanced economies.

Only then, will investor confidence in markets and public debt be restored.

"Unless governments spell out how they intend to effect the necessary adjustment over the medium term, a cloud of uncertainty will continue to hang over the international economy, with downside risks for output and employment in the short term," it said.

(AP) ? After Arian Foster ran over the New York Jets all night, it was time for the defense to seal things for the Houston Texans.

A six-point lead. Three minutes left. Mark Sanchez and the Jets 84 yards away from sending the Texans to their first loss with a crowd-pleasing comeback.

Not on this night.

Kareem Jackson intercepted Sanchez with 1:51 remaining as the Texans held on for a 23-17 victory Monday night and a 5-0 start.

"That's what you dream about," defensive end J.J. Watt said. "It's Monday Night Football. You're on the field. You have a chance to end the game. That's what you want. For us to go out there and do that, it's huge."

Foster ran for 152 yards and a touchdown, and the Texans overcame some big throws by Sanchez, a few exciting moments by Tim Tebow and a 100-yard kickoff return by Joe McKnight to beat the Jets for the first time in team history. The Texans (5-0) joined the Atlanta Falcons as the NFL's only teams without a loss.

"Arian stepped up and played huge," quarterback Matt Schaub said. "We're very excited to be 5-0 and get a win on the road."

It was a close one, though. Much closer than most expected. After all, the Jets (2-3) were heavy underdogs after coming off a 34-0 loss to San Francisco last week, but made a game of it.

"You got to give yourself a chance to win and we did that tonight," said Sanchez, whose throw was intercepted by Jackson after tipping off the hands of Jeff Cumberland.

Schaub was 14 of 28 for 209 yards and a touchdown to Owen Daniels, winning his ninth straight game ? the longest active streak in the NFL ? dating to last season. Daniels finished with four catches for 79 yards for the Texans, who have just their second five-game winning streak in team history.

"A big part of that is it doesn't matter on this team about stats or individually what is going on," Daniels said. "It's great to be a part of something like that."

The enthusiasm was tempered, though, by a left knee injury to star linebacker Brian Cushing that coach Gary Kubiak said he was "very concerned" about.

"I don't know what happened," Kubiak said. "They tell me he cut on a play and his foot might have got stuck in the turf."

Tebow got the MetLife Stadium crowd fired up at times during the game, including running for a first down on a fake punt. He also threw a pinpoint deep pass that newly signed Jason Hill should have caught, and later took a direct snap and ran for 13 yards to get the ball near the goal line in the fourth quarter. But other than that, Tebow spent most of his time on the sideline ? again.

"You know, going in, I had no idea when I would go in," Tebow said. "I just try to be ready at all times."

After Shayne Graham's 42-yard field goal made it 20-7 late in the third quarter, McKnight got the Jets right back into it with his 100-yard kickoff return ? his second of his career ? to cut the Texans' lead to 20-14 with 4:38 left in the third quarter.

New York then attempted an onside kick, but the ball went through Chaz Schilens' hands and Shiloh Keo recovered, giving the Texans the ball with good field position.

"If I caught it, we probably would've won the game," Schilens said. "Huge letdown."

Schaub hit fullback James Casey for 30 yards to quiet the crowd, but the Jets' defense held the Texans to a 22-yard field goal with 13 seconds left in the quarter.

Nick Folk's 21-yard field goal with 11:55 left made it 23-17, but it appeared the Jets would get more.

Sanchez hit Cumberland for 24 yards on first down, and then Jeremy Kerley for 36 yards two plays later. Then, Tebow came in ? with Sanchez lined up as a wide receiver ? and rumbled up the middle for 13 yards to make it first-and-goal from the 3. The crowd at MetLife Stadium went wild, sensing a chance at Tebow's first touchdown since being acquired by New York in March.

Tebow stayed in but was stopped for no gain. Then, Sanchez ? who has been under fire with many calling for Tebow to take his starting job ? had a pass tipped by Watt and then threw incomplete to Schilens in the end zone on third down.

"We could've won, we should've won," Schilens said. "We got in the way of ourselves again. Sooner or later, we'll fix it."

Foster walked untouched into the end zone for a 13-yard touchdown to give the Texans a 14-7 lead with 11:11 left in the first half. He gained 42 yards on three straight carries on the 67-yard drive.

The Jets threatened late in the half, but Sanchez's pass was tipped by Watt and went off Kerley to Brice McCain, who ran back the interception 86 yards before Kerley caught him at the New York 9. Graham made a 27-yard field goal as the half ended to make it 17-7.

The Texans opened the game by scoring on an efficient 8-play, 85-yard drive capped by a 34-yard touchdown catch by a wide-open Daniels less than 4 minutes in. Daniels, who earlier gained 14 yards on a screen pass, got wide open behind the secondary as New York's safeties both bit on Schaub's play-action fake.

"It was huge to start fast," Schaub said. "We knew they were going to come out ready to play, fired up, with a lot of energy. We were just trying to take that wind out of their sails."

The Jets tied it late in the opening quarter, taking advantage of an interception by Antonio Cromartie. Four plays later, the Jets tied it for their first points in two weeks ? a 27-yard TD catch by Cumberland.

"It was a lot of courage, a lot of effort that we showed," Tebow said. "It wasn't always perfect and we always didn't execute the way we want to, but you can never question our toughness or our effort or our character."

NOTES: Cromartie held Andre Johnson to one catch for 15 yards. Johnson also had a drop. ... Jets C Nick Mangold left early in the third quarter with an injured ankle, but returned later in the period. Jets backup receiver Clyde Gates injured his left shoulder and his arm was in a sling after the game. Linebacker Josh Mauga had his right arm in a sling afterward. Jets defensive tackle Kenrick Ellis injured in a knee in the fourth quarter.
