Colorful science sheds light on solar heating

Friday, July 20, 2012

A crucial, and often underappreciated, facet of science lies in deciding how to turn the raw numbers of data into useful, understandable information ? often through graphs and images. Such visualization techniques are needed for everything from making a map of planetary orbits based on nightly measurements of where they are in the sky to colorizing normally invisible light such as X-rays to produce "images" of the sun.

More information, of course, requires more complex visualizations and occasionally such images are not just informative, but beautiful too.

Such is the case with a new technique created by Nicholeen Viall, a solar scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. She creates images of the sun reminiscent of Van Gogh, with broad strokes of bright color splashed across a yellow background. But it's science, not art. The color of each pixel contains a wealth of information about the 12-hour history of cooling and heating at that particular spot on the sun. That heat history holds clues to the mechanisms that drive the temperature and movements of the sun's atmosphere, or corona.

"We don't understand why the corona is so hot," says Viall who wrote about this technique and her conclusions about the corona in a paper that appeared in The Astrophysical Journal. "The corona is 1,000 times hotter than the sun's surface, when we would expect it to get cooler as the atmosphere gets further away from the hot sun, the same way the air gets cooler further away from a fire."

Scientists generally agree that energy in the roiling magnetic fields of the sun must transfer energy and heat up into the atmosphere, but the exact details of that process are still debated. Viall created her technique to see if she could distinguish between theories that describe coronal heating as uniform over time, versus those that say it comes from numerous nanoflares on the sun's surface.

To look at the corona from a fresh perspective, Viall created a new kind of picture, making use of the high resolution provided by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). SDO's Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) provides images of the sun in 10 different wavelengths, each approximately corresponding to a single temperature of material. Therefore, when one looks at the wavelength of 171 Angstroms, for example, one sees all the material in the sun's atmosphere that is a million degrees Kelvin. By looking at an area of the sun in different wavelengths, one can get a sense of how different swaths of material change temperature. If an area seems bright in a wavelength at shows a hotter temperature an hour before it becomes bright in a wavelength that shows a cooler temperature, one can gather information about how that region has changed over time.

To study such temperature changes, many scientists focus on analyzing a specific subset of solar material, such as giant arcs of charged particles that leap up off the sun's surface called coronal loops. Scientists gather information about the loops by comparing nearly simultaneous images of the sun in different wavelengths. Analysis of the loops in each image requires time-consuming, manual analysis to subtract the background observations away from the loops themselves, a process which is also inherently subject to human judgment and bias. In addition, each individual image represents light from only a narrow range of wavelengths, representing material at a narrow range of temperatures.

Viall wanted to look at as much of the solar material in a given area of the corona as she could, incorporating information about a variety of temperatures simultaneously. She also wanted to avoid the subjective process of subtracting out the background. Instead, she decided to look at all light coming from a given spot on the sun at the same time. That meant coming up with a visualization technique to convey all that information at once -- and thus her Van Gogh-like images were born.

For an interesting spot on the sun, Viall examines six channels over an entire 12-hour stretch. She compares each channel to the other channels in turn, assigning it a red, orange, or yellow color if the area has cooled, and assigning it a blue or green color if the area has heated up. She assigns the exact shade of the color based on how much time it took for the temperature change to occur.

"In essence, I'm measuring the time lag of how long it takes a given area to heat up or cool down," says Viall. "But it's totally automated, with no need for humans to make a decision about what to incorporate or ignore. And all of the solar material is represented statistically, not just one wavelength of light."

Viall's images show a wealth of reds, oranges, and yellow, meaning that over a 12-hour period the material appear to be cooling. Obviously there must have been heating in the process as well, since the corona isn't on a one-way temperature slide down to zero degrees. Any kind of steady heating throughout the corona would have shown up in Viall's images, so she concludes that the heating must be quick and impulsive ? so fast that it doesn't show up in her images. This lends credence to those theories that say numerous nanobursts of energy help heat the corona.

Winds played important role in keeping oil away from South Florida

ScienceDaily (July 9, 2012) ? he Deepwater Horizon oil spill in spring 2010 is the largest oil spill in the history of the United States, with more than 200 million gallons of crude oil released at about 1,500 m. depth off the Mississippi Delta in the Gulf of Mexico. At the time of the accident, the proximity of the intense Loop Current, flowing from the Yucatan Channel to the Florida Straits, raised major concerns that the oil at the surface of the ocean would be headed toward the South Florida and East Atlantic coastal areas. However, the dominant transport of oil and oil products was toward the Northern Gulf coastline, and no oil was observed to reach the Atlantic Ocean.

In a new study published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, University of Miami (UM) scientists Matthieu Le H?naff, Villy Kourafalou, Claire Paris, Judith Helgers, and Ashwanth Srinivasan, in collaboration with Zachary Aman from the Colorado School of Mines, and Patrick Hogan from the Naval Research Laboratory, use numerical simulations performed at the High Performance Computing core of UM's Center for Computational Science (CCS) to explain an important aspect of the observed oil transport.

The group has demonstrated the crucial role of the wind-induced surface drift on the fate of the oil in the Gulf of Mexico. This drift was found to have a strong influence on the displacement of oil, accounting for the influence of winds on the top surface of ocean waters through the generation of waves and additional circulation. These particular wind effects are generally not represented in ocean circulation models and were missing from real time ocean circulation predictions during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Incorporating this wind effect to the ocean currents, the UM scientists performed a novel 3D modeling study of the oil's spread from the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico to the ocean's surface, which allowed a realistic representation of the evolution of the 2010 oil spill. The oil spill simulations were verified through observational composites from UM's Center for Southeastern Tropical Advanced Remote Sensing (CSTARS) and from Roffer's Ocean Fishing Forecasting System, and benefited from regional circulation models that assimilate real ocean data; no change in the oil spill extent took place to match observations. Results from this study showed that the model simulation including the wind-induced drift led to substantially improved results over an identical simulation that excluded wind drift effects.

"It is striking to notice how a large part of the surface oil erroneously made it to the Atlantic coast of Florida in the simulations that ignored the wind-induced drift. The simulation taking the drift into account correctly calculated the final destination of the oil along the Northern Gulf coastline, in remarkable agreement with observations," says Le H?naff, a research scientist at the UM Rosenstiel School, who is also affiliated with NOAA's Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS). "The dominant northward winds during spring and summer of 2010 led the surface oil to be pushed onto the Northern Gulf shelf areas and toward the coasts, away from the interior of the Gulf and the Loop Current southward transport. This effect, together with the evolution of the Loop Current, was crucial in maintaining the oil from the Deepwater Horizon rig within the Gulf of Mexico and away from the South Florida coral reefs and beaches."

Opposition to appeal Mexico presidential vote results

AFP - The party of the leftist candidate who came in second in Mexico's presidential election said it would challenge the results, which gave a win to Enrique Pena Nieto, in the Electoral Court.

"We'll go to the Electoral Court in the coming days, within the appropriate time frame," said Jesus Zambrano, chairman of the Party of the Democratic Revolution, whose candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador lost the July 1 vote.

The Federal Electoral Institute on Sunday completed the full count of all ballots and confirmed a win for Pena Nieto of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI).

It now falls upon the Electoral Court to address any dispute such as the one Zambrano promised.

Pena Nieto drew 38.21 percent of the vote, trailed by Lopez Obrador with 31.59 percent and the ruling National Action Party's Josefina Vazquez Mota with 25.41 percent.

Lopez Obrador also came in second in the 2006 presidential election, that time by the slimmest of margins -- less than one percentage point.

He led protests that virtually paralyzed Mexico City for more than a month, claiming fraud in the contest in which outgoing President Felipe Calderon was elected.

Tens of thousands of demonstrators marched through Mexico City on Saturday against the presidential election win of Pena Nieto, accusing him and his party of widespread vote-buying.

Immediately after the presidential vote, Soriana supermarkets were swamped with people armed with yellow gift cards they said came from the PRI, fearful that the cards would be canceled after the election.

The PRI insists it ran a clean election, and Soriana said the cards with union logos are part of a special buyer's program. At least one PRI governor said the cards were part of a state program to help school children.

Pena Nieto, 45, is scheduled to take office in December. He inherits a country engaged in a brutal drug war and an economy struggling to create jobs. Nearly half of all Mexicans are poor, according to government figures.

An ex-governor of the populous state of Mexico, Pena Nieto is married to glamorous soap opera star Angelica Rivera and benefited from family connections with powerful old guard PRI politicians, as well as a savvy media team that carefully stage-managed his appearances.

Pena Nieto's PRI was synonymous with the Mexican state as it governed for seven decades until 2000 using a mixture of patronage, repression, rigged elections and bribery.

EFSA: Food Safe from Animal Cloning

EFSA: Food Safe from Animal Cloning

EU- As far as food safety is concerned, there are no indications that differences exist between food products derived from healthy clones or their offspring ? in particular milk and meat - from those of healthy, conventionally bred animals, according to a new study from teh European Food Safety Authority.

However, in its scientific statement, EFSA said that it recognises that animal health and welfare concerns continue to be associated with this technology.

EFSA?s latest statement on animal cloning which has been produced on the request of the European Commission concurs that no new scientific information has become available since its previous 2010 statement that would require reconsideration of the Authority?s earlier conclusions and recommendations.

Moreover, new scientific information supports previous findings that:

?
  • With respect to food safety, for cattle and pigs there are no indications that differences exist for meat or milk products from healthy clones or from their offspring compared with those from healthy conventionally bred animals. Data on clones of farmed species for food production other than cattle and pigs remain limited and do not allow for the assessment of food safety and animal health and welfare aspects.
  • ?
  • The cloning technology using Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer (SCNT) can produce healthy animal clones but during the SCNT cloning process, animal health and welfare remain a matter of concern mainly due the increased number of deaths at all stages of development (from the perinatal period until the juvenile stage, as well as mortality through abortion). Importantly however, these concerns do not affect offspring of clones born through conventional breeding as they appear to develop normally.
  • ?
  • From the limited data available, there are no scientific indications that would suggest a risk to genetic diversity, biodiversity or the environment from farmed clones when compared to conventionally bred farmed animals.
  • ?
  • Continued research with farmed animals for the optimisation of the different steps of SCNT cloning has resulted in increased knowledge since EFSA?s last statement on this issue. Limited improvements were shown by some researchers but so far have not led to the significant enhancement of the overall efficiency of cloning.

EFSA?s statement also provides information on the current efficiency of cloning in comparison to assisted reproductive technologies using in vitro embryos.

Solid Advice When Trying To Quit Smoking | ArticlePDQ.com

Commit yourself totally to your decision to quit smoking. If you are determined to quit smoking then put your whole soul into the effort. Announce to family and close friends that you are quitting and need support. Write down your specific goals and make them as detailed as you can. Also write down your individual reasons for quitting. Post both lists where you can easily see them ? like the bathroom mirror. Join a support group and attend meetings, whether online or in person. Go all in and make this happen.

Look for a support group in your area or on the internet. Many people find it helpful to discuss their cravings and get support from others who have been through the experience of quitting smoking. Once you have quit, you can offer support to people in the earlier stages, reinforcing your own positive choice.

A little known, but sometimes effective, method for helping you to stop smoking is low-level laser therapy. It works on the same principles as acupuncture, but does not employ needles. It works by relaxation and the release of endorphins in your body. These endorphins are natural substances that can fight pain, often having similar effects to how nicotine helps you relax.

When you are trying to quit smoking, sometimes you have to change other habits which trigger your desire for a puff. Instead of that cup of coffee or that alcoholic drink, have a glass of juice or water. Many people still have an urge to have a smoke after finishing a meal. After a meal, take a walk. Not only will it help take your mind off having a smoke, it will also help keep off the weight that is commonly associated with giving up smoking.

To help you continue to stop smoking in the few days after you quit, you should avoid drinking beverages that you associate with smoking. Caffeine for instance, as many smokers are usually coffee drinkers. By avoiding these smoking triggers and replacing it with something you normally don?t do while smoking, this can help you to remain smoke-free.

Write down a journal of every time you have a cigarette and what your reasons were for having one. This journal will help you to find out what your smoking triggers are. For some it may be the first morning cigarette, or the need to smoke after a meal. For others, it may be stress. Determining your triggers will help you to figure out a way to fight them.

Do not try to set a day to quit. Instead of trying to make a plan, quit today. This sort of planning nearly never works and it will lead to disappointment. Start quitting right away, rather than trying to create an imaginary timeline for yourself. Take action and you will get where you want to be.

Starting an exercise program can help you quit smoking. It is extremely difficult to follow a rigorous exercise program as a smoker. If you are able to find a program that you are enthusiastic about, it can be a strong motivator for quitting smoking. In addition, exercise can help repair the damage done to your lungs.

Perform deep breathing exercises for around three to five minutes every single day in order to help you relax when trying to quit smoking. Always breathe in through the nose, hold this for several seconds, and exhale slowly through the mouth. This method is extremely effective for eliminating smoking from your life.

It was assumed in the introduction that you already know that smoking is not good for your health. It was also assumed that you have at least one quit attempt under your belt. Before you make your next attempt, consider the ideas that were presented in this article. Hopefully, a combination of them will give you success in walking away from smoking forever.

Watch Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012) Online Free

The ?Ice Age? movies were all fantastic. The animation is great, the voice acting is hilarious and every movie got a great story. But, to me, the best movie in the franchise is ?Ice Age 4?. I really enjoyed this movie more than the others. The story involves around Manny, Sid and Diego on a new adventure after the Pangaea continent gets set adrift. In order to get back home, they use a small ice berg as their boat, but along the way, Sid gets reunited with his old family and Diego falls in love with a saber-toothed cat named Shira. Like i said, the franchise is great, but the fourth movie makes it even better. The story is even stronger, the animation is better and the voice acting was absolutely good. There are a lot of hilarious moments all through the movie and i really liked the movie?s theme song ?Chasing the sun? by The Wanted. Although, i gotta admit, it still looks kinda familiar with the other movies, nothing new happens. But i still think ?Ice Age 4? is the greatest movie in the franchise.

Ice Age 4: Continental Drift is a great movie with great humor, storyline and a fantastic cast. Its the fourth in this film series and although I don?t think its as good as animated fhranchcises such as Shrek and Toy Story,it still is a good and entertaining series of films and doesn?t look like its going anywhere anytime soon.

The continental drift is occurring and the ice is breaking apart and Manny is separated from his wife and daughter.Along with Sid,Diego and Sids grandmother, they must find there way back home.On there journey they are kidnapped by pirates and Diego falls for a female white tiger.Meanwhile, and Scrat is still searching for his nut.

To start with ? the technical side of filmmaking. The Ice Age series has always excelled in providing amazing visuals and this one doesn?t disappoint. The use of 3D is brilliant, almost enough to restore my faith in the dire format, with credit going to the blocking choices for the characters (if that exists in animation) ? they are often propelled into situations where the camera angle would turn to have them move towards the camera, creating the intended three-dimensional ?pop out? illusion. To add to the enjoyment of the visual side of the film, the new animals have been pleasingly designed by the animators.

And on an artistic level of filmmaking, the screenplay is unfortunately missing the wit and subtle humour that made the original film hilarious. The comedy is powered by visual gags instead. Some may find this disappointing but with the state of comedy films this modern day that manage to sell, it seems visual gags are what cater nicely to the target audience which is children. However, I give credit to one of the screenwriters, Jason Fuchs, who has helped script a feature film that does manage to entertain at only 24 years old. But when a film works with visual jokes rather than a script for comedy, it doesn?t make one too excited about the prospects of the people behind the camera. Maybe the reception of Continental Drift can help Fuchs work on his next piece though.

Satisfying voice acting is featured in the film, I was in fact surprised that Drake and Nicki Minaj performed decently. The show-stealer was Wanda Sykes who voiced Sid?s granny ? she was an exception to the aforementioned visual/verbal joke argument as her greater comedy asset was undoubtedly her voice. For the record, it was ironic how Peter Dinklage voiced one of the largest pirates.

It?s inevitable that the question ?Is it better than it?s predecessor(s)?? will be asked about Continental Drift. Well, whilst none of the sequels have been of the same quality of the original, I choose to only compare this one to the last one and the answer is yes, mainly due to the subtext of the story.

It revolves around the animals getting captured by pirate animals and doing their best to turn the tables on them. This could be interpreted as a message about how us humans, represented here as the animals, are capturing animals for our own self interest without any real sympathy. I?m no animal activist but I can safely say this is a relative approach for the filmmakers to go for ? also considering as number three was about dinosaurs which have no relevance this present day ? because the amount of environmental groups wanting for us to save these animals is of a large amount and ever-growing animals are becoming abused, unwanted, and abandoned by some of us. So on the socio-political level of filmmaking, Ice Age 4 has a good reason to exist.

All in all, Ice Age: Continental Drift is an entertaining addition to the series. Whilst it still proves that the series could have only gone downhill from the first one, it has a sufficient amount of reasons to be recommended to the target audience, children and fans of the series alike. Plus Scrat is still as entertaining a character as ever.

I will not spoil the ending but can say that it could be looked at as sequel bait but arguably, the series has gone long enough and I predict that a fifth film will really take its toll on it but time shall tell.

Although not regarded in the same league as the Pixar and Disney output, the initial three Ice Age instalments collected over $2bn at the worldwide box office. (Rather surprisingly, that?s $100m more than the Toy Story trilogy earned.) Posting figures as huge as that means we get treated to another adventure with mammoth Manny (Ray Romano), sabre-tooth tiger Diego (Denis Leary) and silly sloth Sid (John Leguizamo); this time with pirates. Like each episode before it, Ice Age 4 prides itself in offering up goofy laughs and goofier characters, with the ragtag bunch of pirates ? led by Peter Dinklage?s droll Captain Gutt and assisted by Nick Frost?s uproarious elephant seal Flynn ? the source of much joy. The old gang don?t dissatisfy either: Sid is the standout as usual but Diego gets more laughs than normal and Scrat?s little journey is ever-amusing. The serious Manny is still, well, the serious Manny, but you can?t win them all. The bucket load of action remains too, however nothing here tops the dinosaur rumbling in part three. Continental Drift is gratifying escapism for the whole family that, despite being the fourth outing for these prehistoric creatures, shows few signs of letting up.

Three central banks take action in sign of alarm

BEIJING/FRANKFURT (Reuters) - China, the euro zone and Britain loosened monetary policy in the space of less than an hour on Thursday, signaling a growing level of alarm about the world economy, although suggestions of coordinated action were played down.

Of the three, the surprise move was from Beijing which lowered its lending rate by 31 basis points to 6 percent following an interest rate cut just a month ago that also came out of the blue.

The European Central Bank cut rates to a record low 0.75 percent following a dire run of economic data. But it steered clear of bolder moves such as reviving its government bond-buying program or flooding banks with more long-term liquidity.

Still, a Reuters poll found the ECB is expected to follow the rate cut with more steps to help the region's economy in coming months.

The Bank of England, whose rates are already at a record low 0.5 percent, said it would restart its printing presses and buy 50 billion pounds ($78 billion) of assets with newly created money to help the economy out of recession.

"It is a surprise that they are moving so quickly. It shows that policymakers' concerns about the global economy have only grown," Mark Williams, an economist at Capital Economics in London, said of the People's Bank of China's action.

A raft of Chinese data is due next week, including second-quarter gross domestic product that officials may know to be poor, he said. But they may also be trying to foster suggestions of acting in concert.

"Policymakers may have felt that cutting rates on the day that the ECB (did) the same would deliver a bigger impact, encouraging talk of a coordinated response to the slowdown in the global economy," Williams said. "Again, though, this might simply underline the seriousness of the downside risks."

"NO COORDINATION"

In Frankfurt, ECB President Mario Draghi denied any globally coordinated central bank action of the sort seen after the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008.

"On coordination, no, there wasn't any ... that went beyond the normal exchange of views on the state of the business cycle, on the state of the economy, and on the state of global demand," he told a news conference.

Asked if conditions were now as bad as they were in late 2008 when the world's financial system was teetering, Draghi replied: "Definitely not."

The action puts even more focus on what the U.S. Federal Reserve will do when it holds its next meeting on July 31 and August 1. The Bank of Japan meets next week.

Last month, the Fed held off on another round of bond-buying but its chief, Ben Bernanke, said there was "considerable scope to do more" and Wall Street bond firms polled by Reuters saw a 50 percent chance of another asset purchase program.

Some encouraging data on the labor market on Thursday tempered anticipation the central bank could undertake a third round of bond purchases, known as quantitative easing or QE3.

But more weight will be given to Friday's nonfarm payrolls report, which is expected to show job growth picked up in June but still remained tepid at 90,000 jobs.

"If we get a couple of more bad jobs reports, (the Fed) will come in with more stimulus. Today's reports suggest they might hold off, but they will want to see more data before they decide," said John Canally, economist and investment strategist at LPL Financial in Boston.

In recent weeks, economic evidence from Asia, Europe and the United States has pointed to a world economy running out of steam.

WILL IT WORK?

All the major central banks, with interest rates at historic lows, face the law of diminishing returns.

The Bank of England had already created 325 billion pounds of new money before Thursday's addition. In doing so, it has successfully driven borrowing costs to all-time lows, yet the UK economy is languishing in recession.

"The BoE has been excessively optimistic about how powerful QE is," said Philip Rush, an economist at Nomura, referring to the money-creating strategies known as qualitative easing.

"The latest increase is more than just a token, but it is not hugely significant for the outlook for growth and inflation."

A poll conducted by Reuters found 27 out of 47 economists believe the central bank will stop at the announced 375 billion pounds in total. A minority said the BoE would do more, with a few still calling for as much as 500 billion.

The euro zone is no better off. "We see now a weakening basically of growth in the whole of the euro area, including the country or the countries that had not experienced that before," Draghi said.

Policymakers could counter that things would be much worse if they had not acted, but with most monetary policy levers already pulled, government action is also required to improve the world's fortunes.

The International Monetary Fund has urged the United States to quickly remove the uncertainty over the path of fiscal policy, which is set to tighten abruptly at the start of next year without congressional action.

Measures announced at a European summit last week bought some calm to the euro zone debt crisis with the promise of action to lower government borrowing costs, but economists say they did not tackle the root problems.

The ECB continues to put the onus on euro zone governments to solve their debt crisis and did not even discuss on Thursday "non-standard" measures such as buying Spanish and Italian bonds to lower borrowing costs which are not sustainable indefinitely.

Elsewhere, Denmark's central bank cut interest rates by 25 basis points, shadowing the ECB's action, in a historic move that put one of its secondary rates into negative territory for the first time. Kenya ended its nine-months-long hawkish stance with a bigger-than-expected 150 basis points rate cut. ($1 = 0.6419 British pounds)
