Egypt crowd attacks candidate's office

CAIRO (AP) ? Security officials and witnesses say several hundred people have ransacked the campaign headquarters of an Egyptian presidential candidate who was ousted President Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister.

The crowd attacked Ahmed Shafiq's Cairo office, smashing windows, tossing out campaign signs and tearing up posters. Then they set fire to the building. No one was hurt.

The attack comes just hours after the country's election commission announced Monday that Shafiq would face the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate, Mohammed Morsi, in a June 16-17 runoff for the presidency.

Shafiq is opposed by the revolutionaries who helped toppled Mubarak last year, while many also fear the Brotherhood's religious rhetoric.

Protests also erupted in downtown Cairo and the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

CAIRO (AP) ? The Muslim Brotherhood is scrambling to broaden its appeal to liberals, leftists and Christians after official results Monday showed that the Islamist group's candidate will face ousted autocrat Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister in next month's runoff for president of Egypt.

To get the support it needs, the Brotherhood must tone down its religious rhetoric and offer far-reaching concessions, such as protecting the right to protest and strike, election-watchers said.

The Brotherhood's candidate, Mohammed Morsi, will go head-to-head against Ahmed Shafiq, a former air force commander, in the June 16-17 runoff. They were the top vote-getters in last week's first round of voting.

None of the 13 candidates had been expected to get the more than 50 percent of the vote needed to win outright. Still, Morsi's top finish was a surprisingly strong showing, because he was widely viewed as a weak candidate and because the Brotherhood's popularity has eroded recently because of a series of missteps.

Announcing the final results, election commission chief Farouq Sultan said that Morsi won close to 5.8 million votes, or almost 25 percent, while Shafiq garnered 5.5 million votes, or nearly 24 percent. Finishing third was leftist candidate Hamdeen Sabahi with 4.8 million votes, or about 21 percent.

Several hundred Sabahi supporters gathered in Cairo's Tahrir Square, birthplace of last year's uprising, chanting slogans against the military, Morsi and Shafiq. Similar numbers gathered in the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria, where some of the protesters tore down a large Shafiq poster.

Turnout among the country's 50 million registered voters was more than 46 percent, Sultan said.

Shafiq is widely viewed as an extension of the Mubarak regime, and the Morsi-Shafiq runoff is the most polarizing contest possible. In many ways, it mirrors the conflict between Mubarak, himself a career air force officer like Shafiq, and the Islamists he jailed and tortured throughout his years in power.

For Morsi to win, said Khaled Abdel-Hameed, one of the leaders of last year's 18-day uprising against Mubarak, he must make concrete concessions on specific issues.

"A protest boycott of the election is an option," said Abdel-Hameed. "If not, we want Morsi to adopt a package of legislation guaranteeing freedoms, labor union activity and the right to strike and protest."

The U.S.-educated Morsi appears willing to broaden his appeal but has offered few specifics.

He has vowed to be a "president for all Egyptians" ? a nod to minority Christians who voted overwhelmingly for Shafiq. He has pledged to work to realize the goals of the revolution, a promise designed to appease the pro-democracy youth groups behind the uprising that toppled Mubarak. And he has pledged a national unity government.

"We are certain that the remnants of Mubarak's regime and his gang, and those that belong to it that are trying to bring back the former regime will fall flat and will land in the garbage bin of history," he said.

Morsi's success, said Middle East expert Shadi Hamid of the Brookings Institution in Doha, Qatar, depends on how explicit and concrete the Brotherhood promises will be and whether the group can reassure significant segments of the population that view it as opportunist and hungry for power.

Pro-democracy activists say that the Brotherhood did not join their 2011 anti-Mubarak uprising until it became clear it had irreversible momentum and that it later abandoned them during their protests against military rule so as not to lose the goodwill of the generals who took over from Mubarak.

But the alternative ? Shafiq ? will be hard for them to accept.

"Leftists and liberals can hold their noses and vote for Morsi," Hamid said. "The Muslim Brotherhood is moving to the center and not everyone who did not vote for Morsi in the first round was actually voting against him."

The Brotherhood was empowered by the ouster of Mubarak 15 months ago, emerging as the nation's most dominant political force after spending the best part of nearly 60 years as an illegal, underground organization. It went on to win just under half of all seats in Parliament.

But it has failed to translate its dominance in the legislature into real political power, partly because the generals wield near-absolute authority, and also because of the perceived poor performance of its lawmakers.

Its credibility took a hit when it reversed an earlier decision not to field a candidate in the presidential election. Later, it attempted to pack a 100-member panel assigned to draft the constitution with its own lawmakers and other Islamists.

Khalail el-Anani, an expert on Islamic groups from Britain's Durham University, said the Brotherhood needs to change its thinking and cast aside the "persecuted" approach left over from years in the political wilderness.

"They don't realize that things have changed around them," he said. "In order for him to win, Morsi must reinvent himself as a nonpartisan politician."

New effective treatment for tinnitus?

ScienceDaily (May 28, 2012) ? A team of researchers from Maastricht, Leuven, Bristol and Cambridge demonstrated the effectiveness of a new tinnitus treatment approach in the journal The Lancet. Tinnitus is the perception of a noxious disabling internal sound without an external source. Roughly fifteen percent of the population suffers from this disorder in varying degrees along with the associated concentration problems, sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression and extreme fatigue.

Sometimes this disorder is so disruptive it seriously impairs their daily functioning and, unfortunately, there is no cure.

The research conducted by Rilana Cima and her colleagues, however, indicates that cognitive behavioural therapy can help improve the daily functioning of tinnitus patients.

The study, conducted at Adelante Audiology & Communication, followed 492 adult tinnitus patients for a period of twelve months. The effectiveness of an innovative tinnitus treatment protocol was compared to the standard treatment methods offered throughout the Netherlands. The ground-breaking, stepped treatment plan consists of cognitive behavioural therapy and combines elements from psychology and audiology. The therapy aims at reducing the negative thoughts and feelings surrounding tinnitus, symptoms through exposure techniques, movement and relaxation exercises, and mindfulness-based elements.

This is supplemented with elements from the so-called tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT), which examines the problems on a sound perception level. The treatment is offered by a multidisciplinary team of audiologists, psychologists, speech and movement therapists, physical therapists and social workers. The project was funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development (ZonMW), and directed by Johan Vlaeyen, professor behavioural medicine at KU Leuven and Maastricht University.

The results offer compelling evidence to support the effectiveness of this innovative and specialised tinnitus therapy over more traditional forms of treatment. The overall health of the tinnitus patient improves and the severity of their symptoms and perceived impairment decreases after therapy. Moreover, the new treatment is far more effective in reducing negative mood, dysfunctional beliefs and tinnitus-related fear). The specialised tinnitus treatment is effective for both milder and more severe forms of the disorder. The researchers are therefore advocating a widespread implementation of this new treatment protocol.

===============================================================================

Rationale

The rating on Hitachi Capital Insurance Corp. (Hitachi Capital Insurance; A-/Stable/--) reflects explicit support from its parent company Hitachi Capital Corp. (Hitachi Capital; A-/Stable/A-2) in the form of guarantees on claim payments. Standard & Poor's Ratings Services believes that Hitachi Capital Insurance is a strategically important subsidiary of Hitachi Capital Corp. The parent company says it aims to establish a new revenue base by developing 'function-oriented businesses.' Hitachi Capital Corp. is shifting from generating sales through creating products to businesses that provide various functions, including credit insurance. Therefore, we believe the importance of its credit insurance business is growing. The parent company positions credit insurance as one of the new businesses that will allow Hitachi Capital Insurance to utilize its technological know-how and expertise in the leasing and credit businesses to expand in the area.

Hitachi Capital Insurance, on a stand-alone basis, has high-quality investment assets and strong capitalization. Hitachi Capital Insurance intends to enhance its niche market positions by leveraging its connections through the Hitachi group. However, the company's business franchise is limited to the Japanese non-life insurance market, which Standard & Poor's views as a weakness.

Hitachi Capital Insurance is the successor of the former Unum Japan Accident Insurance Co. Ltd. (Unum Japan), which was established by U.S.-based UnumProvident Corp. (UnumProvident; not rated) in 1994. Hitachi Capital, a major Japan-based leasing company within the Hitachi group, purchased the company in January 2004 and renamed it on April 1, 2004. Hitachi Capital has 79.4% ownership of the insurer and Sompo Japan Insurance Inc. (A+/Stable/--) has 20.6%. Sompo Japan supports Hitachi Capital Insurance by performing a range of business functions, including human resources, administration regarding notifications of claims from policyholders, and claims-handling services.

The company's main businesses had traditionally been long-term disability (LTD) insurance, which was inherited from Unum Japan, and fire insurance for housing loan borrowers. Following the insurer's review of its business structure in fiscal 2007 (ended March 31, 2008), credit insurance replaced fire insurance as the second pillar of the company's business after LTD insurance.

The company puts a higher weighting on safety and liquidity in investment assets, which account for 95.8% of its total assets and are mostly invested in deposits, Japanese government bonds, and highly rated corporate bonds. As such, the quality of its investment assets is high. The company's capitalization is solid, in light of risks relating to insurance policies and its investment assets; it had received a capital injection of JPY3.2 billion from its parent Hitachi Capital Corp in fiscal 2007. The company is likely to receive financial support from the parent when needed.

In fiscal 2010 (ended March 31, 2011), Hitachi Capital Insurance's net written premiums decreased by 0.5% from the previous fiscal year to JPY3.62 billion. Revenues from LTD increased, while credit insurance revenues decreased. Accordingly, LTD accounted for approximately 70% of net written premiums while credit insurance accounted for the remaining 30%. The insurer's loss ratio on a written base improved by 2.3 percentage points from the previous fiscal year to 38.5%, mainly due to lower loss payments on major credit insurance claims. Meanwhile, its expense ratio deteriorated by 0.8 percentage point to 43.8%. Accordingly, the insurer maintained its combined ratio at a favorable level at 82.3%. The company posted net losses for three consecutive years until fiscal 2007, but turned profitable from fiscal 2008 (ended March 31, 2009) after its business restructuring. In fiscal 2011 (ending March 31, 2012), due to its business' limited exposure to natural catastrophes, such as the Great East Japan Earthquake and the stable growth of LTD, we expect the company to maintain a net profit.

As for LTD, significant growth in insurance premiums paid by large organizations, such as corporations, is unlikely amid the current slow recovery in the Japanese economy. In addition, sales of LTD products to individual policyholders have become more competitive. Hitachi Capital Insurance has been reviewing insurance contracts with high loss ratios and strengthening its underwriting operations since fiscal 2007 to improve the profitability of its LTD business. These efforts have already proven effective to a certain degree. Hitachi Capital Insurance will be challenged to increase revenues from its two core businesses and bolster its risk management system, and raise revenues from the insurance business in a stable manner.

Standard & Poor's evaluates Hitachi Capital Insurance's Enterprise Risk Management as Adequate, as we see no material flaws in its management of the various risks that it undertakes.

Outlook

Given the explicit guarantee from Hitachi Capital Corp., the stable outlook on Hitachi Capital Insurance mirrors that on the parent. Any changes in the parent's ratings or outlook will be reflected in the rating on the insurer. We may also downgrade Hitachi Capital Insurance if there are any changes in terms of explicit support from Hitachi Capital, which is currently given in the form of guarantees, or if its status as a strategically important entity within the group changes.

CHICAGO The diet and activity levels of patients may be improved through use of mobile technology, remote coaching and financial incentives, according to a report of a randomized controlled trial published in the May 28 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, a JAMA Network publication.

Not following a physician's lifestyle change advice is a major barrier to patients achieving effective preventive care. Many physicians are skeptical that patients will change their unhealthy behaviors, and physicians also report a lack of time and training to effectively counsel their patients, researchers write in the study background.

"This study's interventions leveraged handheld technology to create efficient interventions that make self-monitoring more convenient, extend decision support into life contexts where lifestyle choices are made, and convey time-stamped behavioral data to paraprofessionals who provide coaching remotely," the researchers note.

Bonnie Spring, Ph.D., of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, and colleagues randomly assigned 204 adult patients (48 men) with elevated intake of saturated fat and low intake of fruits and vegetables, and high sedentary leisure time and low physical activity into 1 of 4 treatments. The treatments were: increase fruit/vegetable intake and physical activity, decrease fat and sedentary leisure, decrease fat and increase physical activity, and increase fruit/vegetable intake and decrease sedentary leisure. Patients used personal digital assistant devices to record and self-regulate their behaviors.

During three weeks of treatment, patients uploaded their data daily and communicated as needed with their coaches by telephone or by email. The participants could earn $175 for meeting goals during the treatment phase. In addition, there was a 20-week follow-up during which patients could earn from $30 to $80 for continuing to record and transmit their data.

"The increase fruits/vegetables and decrease sedentary leisure treatment maximized healthy lifestyle change compared with the other interventions," the authors comment. They note that lifestyle gains diminished once treatment ended, as expected, but improvements persisted throughout the follow-up period.

From baseline to the end of treatment to the end of the follow-up, respectively, mean (average) servings per day of fruits/vegetables changed from 1.2 to 5.5 to 2.9, mean minutes per day of sedentary leisure from 219.2 to 89.3 to 125.7, and daily calories from saturated fat from 12 percent to 9.4 percent to 9.9 percent, according to the study results.

"This study demonstrates the feasibility of changing multiple unhealthy diet and activity behaviors simultaneously, efficiently and with minimal face-to-face contact by using mobile technology, remote coaching, and incentives," the authors comment.

Invited Commentary: Using Technology for Interventions on Health Risk Factors

In an invited commentary, William T. Riley, Ph.D., of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Md., writes: "Via technology, we will soon be able to deliver fully automated and configurable multiple risk factor interventions that monitor progress continuously and can be delivered throughout the day every day."

"It remains an empirical question, however, whether these technological advances improve outcomes, reduce costs or both," Riley continues.

"Spring et al have contributed to the empirical evidence of the value of these technologies, but many more research contributions such as this are needed to establish that technologically delivered multiple risk factor interventions improve outcomes," Riley concludes.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) ? Space station astronauts floated into the Dragon on Saturday, a day after its heralded arrival as the world's first commercial supply ship.

NASA astronaut Donald Pettit, the first one inside the docked capsule, said the Dragon looks like it carries about as much cargo as his pickup truck back home in Houston. It has the smell of a brand new car, he added.

"I spent quite a bit of time poking around in here this morning, just looking at the engineering and the layout, and I'm very pleased," Pettit said from the brilliant white compartment.

To protect against possible debris, Pettit wore goggles, a mask and a caver's light as he slid open the hatch of the newest addition to the International Space Station. The complex sailed 250 miles above the Tasman Sea, just west of New Zealand, as he and his crewmates made their grand entrance. The atmosphere was clean; no dirt or other particles were floating around.

"This event isn't just a simple door opening between two spacecraft ? it opens the door to a future in which U.S. industry can and will deliver huge benefits for U.S. space exploration," the Space Frontier Foundation, an advocacy group, said in a statement.

The California-based SpaceX ? formally Space Exploration Technologies Corp. ? is the first private company to send a vessel to the space station. It's run by Elon Musk, a billionaire who helped create PayPal and founded the electric car company Tesla Motors.

Now that the space shuttles are retired, NASA is handing over orbital delivery work to American business in order to focus on bigger and better objectives, such as getting astronauts to asteroids and Mars. The space agency hopes astronaut ferry trips will follow soon; SpaceX contends its Dragons could be carrying space station astronauts up and down within three or four years.

Flight controllers were ecstatic to be at the cusp of this new commercial era.

"It's great to see you guys inside Dragon. It looks great," Mission Control radioed.

The six space station residents have until the middle of next week to unload Dragon's groceries and refill the capsule with science experiments and equipment for return to Earth. Unlike all the other cargo ships that fly to the orbiting lab, the Dragon is designed for safe re-entry. It will be freed on Thursday and aim for a Pacific splashdown.

The Dragon contains 1,000 pounds of food, clothes, batteries and other provisions. It will bring back 1,400 pounds' worth of gear.

Until now, only major governments have launched cargo ships to the space station. Russia, Japan and Europe will keep providing supplies, and Russia will continue to sell rocket rides to U.S. astronauts until SpaceX or other companies are ready to take over. Several American enterprises are competing for the honor.

Pettit noted that the Dragon ? 19 feet tall and 12 feet wide ? is roomier than the Russian Soyuz spacecraft he rode up in.

"Flying up in a human-rated Dragon is not going to be an issue," he assured reporters during a news conference.

The unmanned bell-shaped capsule was launched Tuesday from Cape Canaveral aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Pettit used the space station's robot arm Friday to snare the craft.

During Saturday's news conference, Pettit played down his role in the historic event. He noted that the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, which opened up America's Western frontier, was commemorated by the pounding of a golden spike.

"This is kind of the equivalent of the golden spike," he said. "And one other interesting detail ? nobody remembers who pounded that golden spike in. The important thing is to remember that the railroad was completed and was now open for use."

Success or failure of the new commercial space effort ? the cornerstone of President Barack Obama's vision for NASA ? does not hinge on a single mission but rather many missions over many years, Pettit stressed.

"Commercial spaceflight will blossom due to its own merits," he said.

Samsung submits patent application for speech-recognizing robot

Samsung will soon launch its Siri-style S Voice software on the Galaxy S III, but in the more distant future it could bring speech recognition technology to standalone robots. A patent application from the company details an automaton that can adjust its voice detection capabilities to account for ambient noise, letting it recognize when people are talking even in loud locations. It remains unclear just what the robot will do for you once it hears your commands -- maybe it will be on call for cooking you dinner and the like. Judging by that pic, at least, the concept looks like a good time for all involved.

Amanda Slavin: Investing in Potential: Don't Walk Backwards Into ...

As a New Yorker, I go to the same five places every week. I have my deli where I get my coffee every morning, my brunch place I go every weekend, my spot for drinks I go to meet friends, my favorite dinner spot, and my favorite place to go for breakfast and meetings.

It is more than just a routine; it has become almost impossible to not go to these same places week in and week out. I have also found that I go into routines with other areas of my life -- patterns that cannot be broken, men that are usually broken and need fixing, situations where I keep making the same mistakes. I started realizing and analyzing these patterns when I started "checking in" places on a social media platform called Path. I realized I was going to the same place almost every single night, and I was talking about the same problems but with just different pieces to the puzzle.

I also started to recognize that I was not the only one who couldn't break patterns after a conversation I had with my roommate who is currently leaving NYC to move back to the South. In fact, it seems as if most of my friends are leaving NYC (I guess it's the time for the quarter-life "aha moment"), and my roommate told me she had a bucket list of places to visit and things to do in NYC during her last month of living here.

Just a few items on the list were visiting the Highline, going to the real Little Italy, and going to a Yankees game -- all of the activities you would choose to do while visiting NYC for the first time. Here is the catch, though: she has lived here for close to five years. I started thinking of all of the museums I had been to, the Broadway shows I had attended, and the experiences that made me fall in love with New York, and I realized most of these experiences came from when I was a child visiting the city. I had not done anything that took me outside my comfort zone in New York while living here. I have been traveling every weekend to get out of my comfort zone, not even recognizing that I don't need to travel to be able to do this. I need to be brave enough to face my life and decisions every day and push myself outside of my comfort zone in my day to day life.

If anyone read my piece on my experience at a healer/medium, I had a big epiphany after sorting through what the healer told me in regard to the way I was treating life and myself. I am in the way of myself. I have the power to make decisions that will affect not only my life but also others' lives. My dear friend gave me some advice recently; she said, "stop walking backwards into your future." I started to let this sink in and started thinking about my past three years in NYC. It has been a blur of parties, dinners, brunches, wine, amazing food, experiences and events. There were nights I remember rushing from event to event just so I could make time to see all the people I promised I would support. Now, at the age of 26, introspectively looking at where my life is now and where I want to go, I started to think: Am I living my life fully? Embracing all I can about NYC? Am I appreciating the people and the things that matter or am I letting the fast-paced life of a New Yorker and the day-to-day routines of my life distract me from what I really want?

I have a problem with saying yes to too much, giving myself up for everyone I care about and love. Another friend said to me recently, "The quality of your yesses depend on the quality of your nos." I started to realize that there has to be a point in your life or even your day where you stand up for what you want, whether that means removing yourself from situations you don't think are necessary or good for you, or saying no to too many events a night, you are making decisions and judgments that will better your life, even if others might not understand or agree with that.

I think it has become more and more difficult to "live for yourself" because we are so busy sharing what we are doing with everyone else and so busy wondering what everyone is constantly doing. This week, every news outlet and minifeed post commented on Facebook going public. There were articles scrutinizing this decision, people commenting that there are a lot better things to invest in, major companies removing their campaigns, and a whole lot of back and forth about whether this was the right decision. It made me really start to evaluate how much Facebook has changed the way people look at and share what they do and the decisions they make. People share with the world where they are at any given moment with check-ins, tags of people they were with and pictures. This obsession with posting about what you are doing, and thinking about what your ex -- or that guy you never want to see on your minifeed, or that girl you met at that one party (and still not sure if you really did meet her or if she just said that when Facebooking you) -- is doing has gotten in the way of just living. We are bombarded with so much information and feel the need to share so much information that it has almost replaced the opportunity to embrace ourselves, our lives and appreciate the world around us in the real world.

I think Facebook has changed the way we view our day-to-day experiences and what we invest our time in. We allow ourselves to be swept away by all of the sharing of what we are doing; we sometimes forget the value the experience. I started to think of this reality where so much of our time is invested in other people -- people I sometimes love or sometimes don't know, and sometimes don't want to know but have to -- and how little time I invest in myself. It also made me realize of the power of investing. What other investments can we make in our day-to-day lives that will not only positively impact us but also the world around us?

The first step is to invest in your own potential, start to live your life fully and invest in what makes you happy -- whether that is taking an hour a day to walk the streets of NYC or it is biking across the Brooklyn Bridge, it is your decision. Walk forward to your future. The second is to invest in your own future as well as others' potential to create a better future for all. My dear friend Becky Straw had an amazing event this week for her organization Adventure Project, "a nonprofit organization established to increase investments in positive social enterprises around the world to end poverty." Becky is the type of person that has dedicated her life into investing in others' potential, seeing that her time is best spent supporting others and helping them accomplish their dreams, which in turn will change their communities and the world.

I think its sometimes easy to invest in the tedious day-to-day lives of others around you, to never break out of your comfort zone, and to stay going to the same restaurants, putting yourself in the same situations that hurt you, making decisions that are for are right for others even if they might not be right for yourself. I am realizing now that there is a time to invest in potential -- your own potential and the potential of others who in turn will better the world -- and there are times to let go. Let go of the people in your life who are bringing you down and the fat in your life that is distracting you, and invest in yourself, your potential and embrace the world around you walking forwards into your future. Only when you do that can you start to see the potential in others, and always make time to walk the Highline, go to a Yankees game, and check out the real Little Italy.
