Knight Of The Round Tablet? UK Gov Honour for Ive Heralds New Year Of Tech

160px-Jonathan_Ive_2009Honours and medals from Queens and Kings may be an alien concept in Silicon Valley, but they are a delightfully steam-punk tradition, still continued in a Britain which long ago said goodbye to its Empire, yet still has Knights and 'Commander' orders to hand out. Thus, Apple?s chief designer, Jonathan Ive, has been knighted in the Queen?s New Year?s honours list, principally for his work in industrial design and championing British talent abroad. Ive was already made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 2006. Being a Knight means he is now Sir Jonathan Ive - a moniker which should, at the very least, bump him to the front of the average restaurant queue when he's in London.

(AP) ? Venezuela is offering free surgeries for women to remove faulty French-made breast implants, the country's top health official said.

Health Minister Eugenia Sader said women with implants made by the now-defunct French company Poly Implant Prothese may go to hospitals that carry out plastic surgery to have the implants removed, the state-run Venezuelan News Agency reported.

Sader said Tuesday that the free procedure will simply be to remove the implants and will not include replacing them.

"Those patients are running a risk," Sader said. However, she said, women need not seek emergency care and instead may visit hospitals at their convenience.

France's health system has recommended that women with the PIP implants get them replaced, and has agreed to pay for surgeries. In Brazil and Argentina, however, health officials just recommend checkups.

The president of Brazil's Plastic Surgeons Association, Jose Horacio Aboudib, said "I'd remove them from any patient that wants to, but I don't see the need for everyone to go into surgery."

"In France, the government pays for the surgery. Here it is not considered a public health risk, and so the patient would have to pay for it," Aboudib said, noting that his association will create a breast implant registry in January, so that doctors can register information on surgeries and the implant material used in a database aimed at improving patient safety and care.

On Tuesday, a group of 50 women in Argentina threatened to sue their plastic surgeons if they don't get free replacements of the faulty French breast implants.

The group is led by attorney Virginia Luna, who herself has the "PIP" silicone gel packs implanted in her breasts. She said five of her clients have obtained out-of-court agreements to provide free replacements, and if the rest don't get them as well, her group will sue.

Argentine clinics say they'll replace leaky implants, but the symptoms aren't always detectable, and Luna says any woman with the faulty implants can suffer psychological damage.

It's unclear how many women have the PIP implants in Venezuela, where breast enlargement surgery is popular and doctors say the French implants used to be widely used.

An estimated 35,000 to 40,000 women in the country have breast enlargement surgery each year, said Dr. Marisol Graterol, president of the Venezuelan Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has criticized the widespread popularity of breast surgery, saying women shouldn't be sold on an image that big bosoms are attractive.

The plastic surgery society recommended last week that women with PIP breast implants see a doctor to have them checked. Graterol said doctors should decide depending on each patient's situation whether or not the implants need to be removed.

Sales of PIP implants were halted in Venezuela in April 2010, Graterol said.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Henry Saud said he removed ruptured PIP implants from more than 10 patients during the past year.

In some cases, his patients hadn't noticed anything wrong and the leaking implants were detected during imaging exams, Saud said. In other cases, "they felt discomfort and had swelling."

"It used to be one of the most-used brands," Saud said.

3 NATO troops killed by bomb in east Afghanistan

(AP) ? Three NATO service members have been killed by a roadside bomb in eastern Afghanistan, the alliance said Wednesday. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying the target was a U.S. military convoy.

NATO's statement said that the deaths occurred Tuesday, but provided no further details about the incident or the nationalities of the troops.

The Taliban said the attack took place in Paktiya province, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) south of Kabul.

The latest deaths bring December's toll of foreign troops killed in Afghanistan to 23, for a total of 539 deaths so far this year. The yearly tally is considerably lower than for 2010, when more than 700 troops died. The number of wounded has remained high, dipping only slightly from last year's total of more than 5,000 service members.

Also Tuesday, a community council leader in the Musa Qala district of restive Helmand province was shot and killed by insurgents along with his 20-year-old son and two-year-old grandson, the governor's office said.

A statement from the office said the attack occurred late in the evening, as council leader Adbdul Baqi was heading home from his office. There were no further details.

The U.S.-led coalition has started transitioning parts of Helmand to the government as part of a plan to cede full control of the country's security to Afghan forces by the end of 2014.

Studies see little benefit of Avastin against ovarian cancer, more side-effects

Avastin, the blockbuster drug that just lost approval for treating breast cancer, now looks disappointing against ovarian cancer, too. Two studies found it did not improve survival for most of these patients and kept their disease from worsening for only a few months, with more side-effects.

The Genentech drug won approval in Europe last week for advanced ovarian cancer. But its maker has no immediate plans to seek the same approval in the United States. After talking with the Food and Drug Administration, "we do not believe the data will support approval" although no final decision has been made, said Charlotte Arnold, a spokeswoman for Genentech, part of the Swiss company Roche.

Results of the studies are in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.

In November, the FDA revoked Avastin's approval for breast cancer because it did not meaningfully extend life and can have serious side-effects. Without approval, doctors can prescribe the drug but insurers may not pay. Treatment with it can cost $100,000 a year.

Avastin can still be sold for some colon, lung, kidney and brain cancers. The new research was aimed at adding ovarian cancer to the list.

One study, led by Dr. Robert Burger of Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, involved nearly 1,900 women with advanced ovarian cancer given one of three treatment combinations. The time until the disease got worse was a median of 10 months in those given just chemotherapy; adding Avastin improved that by just one to four months for the other two groups.

Survival was similar among the groups, and side-effects were higher among those on Avastin ? mostly high blood pressure but also some stomach and gut problems that needed treatment.

In the other study, led by researchers from England, more than 1,500 ovarian cancer patients were given chemo with or without Avastin. The drug kept cancer at bay just one to two months longer than chemo alone did, with more cases of high blood pressure. There was a trend toward improved survival for those on Avastin, but the difference was too small to say the drug was responsible.

Genentech helped pay for the studies and some of the researchers consult for the company.

Dr. Gary Lyman, a Duke University researcher who was on the FDA advisory panel that recommended revoking Avastin's approval for breast cancer, wrote in an email that he agreed with the company's decision not to seek approval for ovarian cancer.

"The situation is very similar" to the results in breast cancer, and approval is unlikely unless a biological marker or test can show which patients might benefit, he wrote.

About 220,000 new cases of ovarian cancer are diagnosed each year around the world, and it causes 140,000 deaths. In the United States, the National Cancer Institute estimates 22,000 new cases and 15,000 deaths each year.

Police union chief reiterates backing for plastic bullets :: Belfast Telegraph -- Deborah McAleese

As the PSNI prepares to publish a report into police methods used during the summer riots, the Police Federation has defended the controversial use of water cannon and plastic bullets.

PSNI figures (see panel on right) show that during 10 nights of the most serious rioting this summer, 350 plastic bullets were fired by police.

The largest number of plastic bullets fired at one location ? 107 ? was during violent disorder in north Belfast on July 12.

A total of 70 were fired during trouble in east Belfast on June 21 when officers came under live fire from both loyalist and republican paramilitaries.

The PSNI said the main reasons for firing the plastic bullets ? officially known as AEPs (Attenuating Energy Projectiles) ? were to protect officers, the public and to prevent an offence.

Although their use is strictly controlled, the tactics have been the subject of heated debate.

A review of the summer riots carried out by Assistant Chief Constable Alistair Finlay is due to be presented before the Policing Board early in the new year.

Police Federation chairman Terry Spence said he is ?frustrated listening to nonsense? from some politicians who reject the use of the weapons to control riot situations in Northern Ireland.

?All this talk of protecting the human rights of the criminals and the rioters ? do police officers not have human rights?

?If we were to be deprived of water cannons and AEPs then officers? lives would be at risk.?

?It is not like public order situations in England, Scotland and Wales. During public disorder here officers are faced with blast bombs, nail bombs and gunfire from rioters wanting to kill them,? said Mr Spence.

But, chairman of the Policing Board?s human rights committee Conall McDevitt (below) has claimed that the weapons do not actually make Northern Ireland a safer place and that they should no longer be deployed.

The debate over their use has been reignited following a report this week by the Home Affairs Select Committee which has rejected the use of water cannon and plastic bullets in England.

The report by MPs is at odds with a report by Her Majesty?s Inspectorate of Constabulary which recommended that tougher tactics should be used on English streets to deal with public disorder, including plastic bullets and water cannon.

DUP Policing Board member Jonathan Craig stated that ?any sensible person will draw the conclusion that there should be a limited use of plastic bullets and water cannons to calm riots and save the lives of officers?.

Troops deploy to Afghanistan on Christmas

ATLANTA -- Christmas is a festive day at the USO at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, but it's also a day with big dose of reality.

As the last troops are returning from Iraq, the troops at the USO on Christmas day are deploying for the active war zones of Afghanistan.

For them, the war is far from over, but they worry that the American public has put this war on the back burner.

"I think a lot of people have forgotten about Afghanistan," said Elizabeth Chen, U.S. Army, as?she returned from Iraq and Kuwait. "As soon as Iraq came up, all you heard [was] Iraq, Iraq, and Iraq."

"We still have people out there," she added. "It's sad. I wish people would pay just a little bit more attention. The fact that we have our brothers and sisters, wives and daughters, and so many others over there. It's kind of sad that we forget about that sometimes."

But the troops?on their way back to an active war show little emotion.

"Those feelings I just leave them alone," said Ron Pierre, U.S. Army.?"I have no choice but to go back. In order for me to provide for my family I have to do that."?

"It's my job," added Michael Sheehan, U.S. Army. "It's what I signed up to do. My family is very understanding and supportive. It's OK. It's a little intense at times, but I'm okay with it."

"You've got to do your job day by day," Seth Lapham, U.S. Army, said as he checked in at the USO for his flight to Afghanistan. "You don't really think too much of the harm. You just got to keep your head up and just keep alert and stay focused." "

To brighten the day, and take their minds off what was ahead, the USO went all out to make the deploying troops feel right at home.

A lavish buffet was prepared by Atlanta's leading volunteer chefs and served by a contingent of community volunteers.

And bringing big smiles were?Santa and his helpers. Santa was Jackson Bedford, a Fulton County Judge and former Navy pilot who served in Vietnam.

As Christmas day started winding down, the troops marched across the airport atrium to loud applause and cheers as they headed to their waiting aircraft for a return to an active war.

Obama on political high, but momentum hard to keep (AP)

WASHINGTON ? On a political high, President Barack Obama capped a bruising year by securing a tax cut for millions of Americans ? an achievement that overshadowed Washington's deepening dysfunction and the slow progress of the economy on his watch.

The White House has ended a year with a political victory before. This time around the stakes are higher, and the president is by no means assured of carrying the momentum deep into an election year.

Addressing reporters before heading to Hawaii on Friday, Obama looked like a president in command of the stage again, for now. He left the capital after presiding over a two-month extension of a payroll tax cut ? about $40 per paycheck for someone making $50,000 a year ? that came when House Republicans caved on demands for a longer deal.

Yet on this issue, like many, enormous work remains for Obama after the new year, just when voters begin choosing a Republican nominee to try to oust him from his job.

Obama initially had pushed for a year-long extension of both the Social Security payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits. He got only two months on both because Congress could not agree on how to pay the bill for more without gutting their own political priorities ? the same problem that awaits all sides in the weeks to come.

Although Obama calls a full-year extension a "formality," politically, it is not. So he pushed Congress to work "without drama, without delay" when they return from their own recess.

The whole scene was reminiscent of a year ago, when Obama took a self-described "shellacking" in the midterm elections but still ended up leaving for his yearly Hawaiian holiday on a high note.

In a news conference at the time, a jubilant Obama claimed a "season of progress" after stringing together legislative victories in a lame-duck congressional session, including the repeal of the military's ban on openly gay service members and approval of a new nuclear treaty with Russia.

But progress was short-lived. Obama returned to Washington in January to face a divided Congress and a Republican party prepared to push him to the brink.

This time, Obama left without taking questions from reporters, ensuring no disruption from the narrative all over Washington ? a win for him, a capitulation for House Republicans. Had he engaged the press, Obama may well have been challenged about violence in Iraq since a U.S. troop withdrawal, or his own flip-flop over an oil pipeline included in the tax deal.

Obama may have won the messaging war this December, preventing higher taxes for 160 million Americans. But he gave up plenty to get a deal.

In securing the short-term extension, Obama caved on the controversial Keystone XL pipeline. The president had boldly said he would reject any effort to tie the payroll tax extension to the proposed Canada-to-Texas pipeline; he later gave in to GOP demands to make a decision on the project within 60 days.

Given that the House Republicans' backpedaling far overshadowed the president's compromises, GOP consultant John Feehery said Republican lawmakers are likely to come back to Washington in January even more motivated to take on the president.

"This is a temporary victory," Feehery said. "We're going to go back to the fight once again in a month and a half. This is one battle, not the whole war."

Obama's willingness to stand firm could help rally support among Democrats who have complained that the president too often seems to give in too much.

Obama's hard line at the end of the payroll tax cut talks sent an important message both to his supporters and Republicans, Democratic strategist Karen Finney said. She said both have misinterpreted Obama's prior compromises as a sign of weakness.

"In this instance it was certainly critical that the president not give any more ground," Finney said. "He showed that he does have a point at which he won't go farther."

The economy has been showing signs of coming around, too, which is vital to Obama's chances for a second term. But this is another area in which today's optimism can turn troubling at any time, with outside forces such as Europe's economic woes threatening to dampen the American recovery.

Each year, partisan debate and unfinished business have forced the president to delay departure for his cherished Christmas vacation in Hawaii. This December's stalemate threatened to derail the trip entirely, given that Obama himself pledged to stay in Washington until a deal to extend the cuts was reached.

Obama's original Dec. 17 departure date came and went.

It was only Friday, after the House and Senate finalized the deal, that the White House announced Obama's departure for later in the day.

The president has no public events planned during what is expected to be about a 10-day vacation. He typically spends his days in Hawaii playing golf or going to the beach with his family, though he makes occasional outings for dinner with friends.

The White House says the president's focus will be on spending time with his family. But there will be a small team of advisers traveling with Obama to brief him daily on domestic and international events ? and to help him get ready for the work, and the battles, that wait in January.

Newt Gingrich Remains At Top Of Gop Presidential Field, But Gop Voters Not Satisfied

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich is spending one more week atop the?Republican field in the contest for that party?s presidential nomination. In this?week?s Economist/YouGov Poll, 29% of registered voters who say they will likely?vote in a Republican caucus or primary in 2012 favor Gingrich, while former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney trails in second place with 18%.??

?

?Once again, Texas Congressman Ron Paul is third. Gingrich runs eight points better?among Republican voters who identify with the Tea Party than with those who do?not. He also runs especially well with less well-off and less-educated GOP voters.?College graduates favor Romney.?

But with less than three weeks to go before the Iowa caucuses, there is evidence that?many GOP voters still aren?t happy with the field. This week, only 42% of them?say they are satisfied with the candidates running; 28% want other choices. Two?weeks ago, before businessman Herman Cain suspended his campaign, 51% said?they were satisfied with their options.??

?

And President Barack Obama still leads each of the three top Republicans in a head?to head November matchup. Romney fares the best, trailing by just three points,?within the poll?s margin of error. Gingrich trails Obama by nine points, and Paul?trails the President by seven.??

Etta James placed on breathing machine

Grammy-winning singer Etta James, who has been deemed terminally ill with leukemia, has been hospitalized in California and placed on a breathing machine, her long-time manager and friend said on Friday.

James, 73, best known for the blues ballad "At Last," was taken to the hospital near her home in Riverside, east of Los Angeles, earlier this week because she was struggling to breathe.

"They took her to the hospital. She was having trouble breathing, so they intubated her. She is on a breathing machine and is resting," Lupe De-Leon, the singer's manager for 30 years, told Reuters.

The singer has been in failing health for a number of years and suffers from leukemia, kidney disease and dementia but had previously been cared for at her Southern California home.

Childhood Obesity at Age 8 Linked to Asthma, Allergies (ContributorNetwork)

Children who are overweight by 8 years old were found to have higher incidence of asthma and allergic sensitivity, according to a study published in the American Academy of Pediatrics. Here are specifics on study findings and how they impact parent decisions.

Asthma and childhood obesity studies

In October, Science Daily reported obese children are twice as likely to have asthma as nonobese children. In the Pediatrics study, pediatric allergy and asthma researchers from Norway and Sweden looked at how changes in a child's weight status may affect his predisposition to asthma allergy.

Weight gain in 7-, 8-year-olds linked to asthma problems

The study revealed those with over-85 percent body mass indexes were no more prone to asthma at 12 to 18 months or when they were tested at age 4. By age 8, children with a high BMI were at greater risk for asthma regardless of whether they had been overweight in the earlier years or not. Children were more at risk for wheezing or other problems with inhalant allergies if they were overweight at age 8.

Childhood obesity, asthma parenting implications

Study authors conclude parents should be mindful of asthma in children who have a number of risk factors in combination: BMIs over 85 percent, exposure to secondhand smoke, maternal history of obesity or parents history of asthma or allergy. Weight problems at or after ages 8 to 10 seem to predispose children to other problems as well. In 2008, Science Daily reported on a study by Kansas State University that found children with sedentary lives and high body fat had more asthma-like symptoms after exercise. In 2010, a study from West Virginia University found children of normal weight who don't get a balanced diet or proper exercise are at greater risk for asthma. Study authors recommended parents improve nutrition and boost fitness levels, especially in school years to reduce asthma risk.

Ages 8 to 10 critical for obesity, asthma prevention

A Pediatrics study underscored the concern for obesity at age 8. Forty percent of kids begin school in the 85th percentile. Significant weight gain after ages 8 to 10, especially if not accompanied by equally significant height gain, is an indicator of lifelong obesity problems. Study authors concluded parents should build good nutrition habits early and monitor weight gain at all ages but the time for teaching good nutrition and fitness was in the early school years.

Marilisa Kinney Sachteleben writes about parenting from 23 years raising four children and 25 years teaching K-8, special needs, adult education and home-school.

Ben Heck delivers holiday cheer to gamer with modded macro controller

Patrick Crowley
Benjamin J. Heckendorn is no stranger to game pads designed for people with disabilities, but the macro controller he just whipped up for Patrick Crowley (pictured above) might be his most impressive accessibility hack yet. On the latest episode of his show the modding extraordinaire crafts a breakout box that allows a complex set of commands to be triggered with just the touch of a button or foot switch. The box at the heart of the project is powered by a PIC microcontroller that takes inputs from a series of modular switches (up to eight) and turns them into virtual button presses that are fed to an Xbox 360 through a standard controller. In addition to being able to swap in eight different inputs, each one can be programmed to perform a different macro. We won't ruin all of the fun -- check out the PR and full episode in the source link to watch everything from Ben Heck's holiday epiphany through the final testing.

Stock market down 3 percent for the week

After an early rally, the Dow fell 2.42 points Friday to close at 11866 as worries resurfaced about a breakup of the Euro

An early rally faded on the stock market Friday, leaving indexes down about 3 percent for the week as worries resurfaced about a breakup of the euro. BlackBerry maker Research in Motion plunged after slashing its forecast for holiday sales.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed down 2.42 points Friday, less than 0.1 percent, at 11,866.93. It had been up as many as 99 points after the Italian government won a confidence vote on austerity measures. It turned mixed around midday as Fitch warned that it might downgrade the debt of Italy, Spain and four other countries that use the euro.

Materials and industrial companies rose, signaling that traders expect the economic recovery to remain on track. Utilities, health care and consumer staples companies lagged the market as traders sold stocks that are considered to be safer when the economy is weak.

The Dow Jones industrial average broke a three-day slump Thursday on news that claims for unemployment benefits plunged last week and measures of manufacturing in the Northeast improved dramatically. The Dow lost 360 points over the first three days of the week as investors questioned whether Europe's agreement to closer coordinate fiscal policy would be enough to save the euro from a catastrophic breakup.

Some analysts believe nervousness about Europe this fall and winter pushed stock prices lower than their fair value. Investment adviser Uri Landesman, president of Platinum Partners, expects stocks to rise into next year because of the growing likelihood that economic news and European headlines will remain positive.

"The odds are, the news is going to be better than the market is discounting," Landesman said. He said the market is near the low end of its recent trading range, and a dose of positive news could set off a mini-rally. Any market moves next week could be sharp as trading volume thins out before the Christmas holiday, Landesman said.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 3.89, or 0.3 percent, to 1,219.65. The Nasdaq composite index rose 14.32, or 0.6 percent, to 2,555..33 The Dow is down 2.6 percent for the week; the S&P 2.8 percent. The Nasdaq lost 3.5 percent.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note plunged to 1.85 percent from 1.93 percent earlier Friday after the government said consumer prices were unchanged last month, suggesting that inflation remains low. Low inflation makes bonds more attractive because it doesn't diminish the buying power of the fixed return a bond provides over time.

The gains were broad. Eight of the 10 industry groups in the S&P 500 index rose, led by materials and industrial companies. U.S. factories in some regions have seen shipments and orders rise this month, according to two surveys released Wednesday. Materials companies are benefiting from soaring commodity prices.

Research In Motion Ltd. plummeted 11 percent after the company said late Thursday that new phones seen as critical to its future will be delayed until late next year. RIM also is taking a big loss on unsold tablet computers and predicted that its BlackBerry sales will fall sharply during the holiday sales season.

Online game developer Zynga Inc. fell 5 percent in its first day of trading on the Nasdaq. The maker of Farmville's initial public offering was priced late Thursday at $10 per share, raising $1 billion. That means the San Francisco company can boast the biggest Internet IPO since Google Inc. first offered shares in 2004.

Among the other companies making big moves:

? New York-area cable TV provider Cablevision Systems Corp. plunged 9 percent following the sudden departure of its chief operating officer, Tom Rutledge.

? Adobe Systems Inc. jumped 6.6 percent after the software maker reported earnings and revenues that were far better than what analysts had expected. Analyst Walter Pritchard at Citigroup said the quarter was a "blow-out when most expected weakness."

Iowa newspaper backs Mitt Romney? Weird GOP race gets a little weirder.

The Des Moines Register endorsing Mitt Romney even though Romney has essentially ignored the state? It's just the latest line in a bizarre GOP presidential primary season.?

In another sign that the GOP world has gone completely haywire (as if that was needed), the Des Moines Register has endorsed Mitt Romney for president.?

This, in itself, is not terribly surprising. Former Massachusetts Governor Romney has long been seen as the safest, most-electable GOP pick among the mainstream media and establishment Republican circles. ??

Yet the endorsement also encourages a healthy shrug of the shoulders.

Iowa, after all, is supposed to be the American epicenter of retail politics. Perhaps more than any other state, Iowa likes to be wooed with bus tours and town halls and appearances at state fairs. This is because Iowa does not hold a primary, but caucuses ? involved affairs that encourage only the most committed voters. It makes politics a personal affair in Iowa, and because the caucuses are first nominating process in the nation, candidates are often happy to oblige.

But Romney has spent comparatively little time there. Having been burned in Iowa in 2008, he's apparently been willing to concede it to rivals in order to focus on other states. And the Des Moines Register is endorsing that campaign?

It gets weirder.

As part of his anti-Iowa campaign, Romney has basically set up house in New Hampshire, which of course neighbors Massachusetts (where he was governor) and is generally more supportive of his moderate-leaning policy positions. And the New Hampshire Union Leader endorsed ... Newt Gingrich.

Endorsements are fickle things. Certainly, the Register nod could help Romney in Iowa, where he is in a dead heat with Ron Paul behind front-runner Mr. Gingrich, according to most polls. The polls suggest that the race is wide open, meaning any little advantage could be crucial.

Perhaps more important, the endorsement appears to play into a mounting Gingrich backlash. Doubtful of Gingrich's chances in a general election, the Republican establishment is attacking his weaknesses, and polls indicate that Gingrich is coming back to the pack. The Register endorsement is further fuel for that trend.

In the end, however, the real fuel for this most peculiar race ? the unhappy Republican voter ? remains the biggest and least predictable variable. All evidence suggests that, as unhappy as these voters are about an Obama presidency, they are only slightly more enthused by their choices of candidates to oust him.

No newspaper endorsement, it seems, is likely to change that. ?

The high cost of child care

CLASP

By Allison Linn

If you?re a working parent, chances are at some point you?ve bemoaned the high cost of child care.

The lower your income, the more likely you are to have reason to complain.

A recent graphic from CLASP, an advocacy group for low-income people, shows that families with working moms who live below the poverty line and have kids under 15 are spending 40 percent of their monthly income on child care expenses.

That?s a more than 10 percentage point increase from 2002, according to CLASP.

Both sets of data are based on information from the U.S. Census Bureau, and they exclude people who are getting child care for free or from a family member, government or charity program. The most recent data was released in the spring of 2010.

Hannah Matthews, the director of child care and early education for CLASP, said it?s not clear why child care costs have increased so substantially for very low-income families. One hypothesis is that child care costs are going up while incomes are dropping or staying steady.

The 40 percent figure is also very high in comparison to families who earn 200 percent above the poverty line, or more. Those families are paying just 7 percent of their monthly income in child care expenses.

Matthews noted that many families in the 7 percent range also likely feel pained by that child care bill.

?It?s 7 percent of their income and feels like such a large amount. It?s striking to think about what it feels like for a family that?s in the 40 percent chart there - what they?re dealing with just to make ends meet,? she said.

SEC to appeal ruling striking $285M deal with Citi (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The government is appealing a federal judge's ruling that struck down a $285 million civil fraud settlement with Citigroup.

The Securities and Exchange Commission said in a court filing Thursday that it plans to appeal the decision issued last month by U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff. The judge said the government's deal with Citigroup did not include enough facts to allow him to determine whether it was fair.

The SEC had accused Citigroup Inc. of misleading buyers of a complex mortgage investment and betting against it in 2007. New York-based Citigroup neither admitted nor denied wrongdoing. Rakoff also objected to the lack of admission of liability.

The agency said Thursday that Rakoff had "committed legal error" by requiring a new standard that would deprive investors of immediate relief.

Miley's Daily Scoop!: Holiday Safety Tips for Your Pets

?We received these safety tips from our Vet and wanted to share them with our furiends so we can all have a safe holiday!

Holiday Hazard

How to keep your pet safe

Dangerous Foods

The following can be toxic to pets: chocolate, raisins, grapes, macadamia nuts, garlic, onion, alcohol, caffeinated beverages, bread dough, and sugar-free candy and gum containing the artificial sweetener xylitol.

Regular Foods

Despite tradition, bones should never be given to pets. Even beef, ham, and other "regular" foods that are not considered toxic can cause illness in pets. If your pet is a moocher, keep a saucer of his regular treats on the table to offer when he asks. He probably won't know the difference!

New Treats and Toys

Even a pet-safe treat can cause stomach upset if it is new to your pet. Offer only one of these at a time (ideally, separated by a few days). If your pet becomes ill after eating a holiday treat, it will be easier to trace the source and discontinue it. Also, check new toys for sharp edges, pieces that can be chewed off, or other potential hazards.

Plants

Hazardous plants include mistletoe, some evergreens (including some types of pine), and holly bushes and berries. Try to keep these plants away from pets, or at least supervise pets when dangerous plants are nearby.

Decorations

Tinsel, tree ornaments, ribbons, string, and garlands are some items that can be dangerous if eaten by pets. Keep these items away from pets ? especially when pets are unattended. Don't forget to cover any electrical cords or keep them out of reach.

Fire and Carbon Monoxide

Monitor pets near fireplaces, wood-burning stoves, candles, and portable heaters. Also, don't forget to check smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they are functioning properly. Space heaters, furnaces, and idling cars (in a garage) can increase the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning in pets and humans.

Christmas Trees

Monitor your pets when they are around your holiday tree. Pets may eat the needles (even from artificial trees) or drink water from the base of the tree, which can be toxic (especially if there are preservatives in it). Keep electrical cords and decorative lights out of reach, too.

NH gay bishop responds to Perry ad (AP)

CONCORD, N.H. ? The Episcopal Church's first openly gay bishop, Gene Robinson of New Hampshire, says GOP presidential hopeful Rick Perry has hit a new low with a campaign ad attacking President Barack Obama on gay rights and religion.

The ad, intended to appeal to Christian conservatives who typically dominate the Iowa caucuses, features Perry saying there's something wrong in America when gays can serve openly in the military but kids can't pray in schools.

Robinson responded Tuesday with an op-ed in The Washington Post in which he says Perry would be pathetic if he weren't so infuriating. Robinson says someone who aspires to be commander in chief shouldn't denigrate the gay and lesbian soldiers he would lead.

Robinson is the Episcopal bishop in New Hampshire, which holds the first primary Jan. 10.
